Carb rebuild kit
« on: November 04, 2017 - 02:18:02 PM »
Hello all,

My 72 Challenger has a 318 in it with a Carter 2 barrel. The block is not the original, I do not know if the carb was original or not.

The car idles great when cold, but stalls when the choke opens all the way up. The carb used to leak a drop of fuel or two onto the intake, that has stopped. My suspicion is that the carb needs a rebuild. Otherwise car runs fantastic, maybe a little rich.

The carb has stamped on the side "MFD BY CARTER CARBURETOR ST LOUIS U.S.A. 2168".

I've been trying to identify which rebuild kit to get - anyone point me to the correct one?

Thanks!!!

Sounds like it is leaned out a little. Have you tried backing out the idle mixture screws a bit? I like to start by gently turning the mixture screws in all the way counting the number of turns. Both sides should be equal. I generally find 1 1/2 turns out is a good starting point, but some engines will like 1/2 turn out while others want 3 turns out. Just as a test, I'd start it cold and as it warms up, I'd back out both mixture screws 1/2 turn extra to see if it runs better once warmed up. If so, try playing with them more.

If you do rebuild, I believe the Carter carbs have a model number stamped on the baseplate, possibly facing the radiator. Ideally, you can order a kit to match this model number and you're good. If not, what I generally do is disassemble the carb and compare the old gaskets to the new set I'm buying. A lot of sellers on eBay take good exploded views of their kits allowing you to ensure you're ordering the right set.

Thanks for that, Beekeeper!

I have not tried adjusting the idle mixture screws yet. It used to idle so well, I kindof figured it was dialed in correctly. Can't hurt to try!

I can see that the previous owner used gasketmaker in the carb, and since it used to leak externally, I'm very suspicious of the carb in general. It's been on my list for a while to clean this thing up.

Carbs are pretty easy once you do one or two. Doesn't hurt to take a few reference pics as you disassemble. Helps if you have a big can of carb cleaner to soak parts in over night. Compressed air is a real must for all the tiny passages. I generally rinse stuff with water as I remove from the carb cleaner, then immediately spray it really good with brake cleaner (especially passages), then use air nozzle to blow everything dry.

Make sure you follow the instructions on the float adjustments and you should be happy with the results.
