Body Filler / Epoxy
« on: January 09, 2018 - 03:18:45 PM »
So this topic may have come up a bunch before, bunch what is the consensus of applying body filler over epoxy? I plan on using the Evercoat Rage Ultra, and I want to know if i should go on bare metal or not. I called the Evercoat Rep for the North East today and waiting for a call back to see what they say, but id like to hear what experiences you guys have had or recommend.

Is there another body filler that is suggested?

Thanks in advance!

Bill

I used the same product, worked very well. Its all about the thickness, you should not be applying it more than 1/4" thick (which is a lot).
Current Mopar
70 Challenger RT 440-6 EFI, 73 Cuda 416-6 EFI
05 Hemi Durango, 01 Ram 4x4, 14 Ram 2500 4X4, 10 PCP Challenger 6 spd RT, 01 Viper GTS ACR, 52 B3B w/330 Desoto Hemi, 70 Hemi RR (under const)
Past Mopars
9 x Challengers. AAR Cuda, 4 RR, 2 GTX, 4 Chargers, etc... (too many to list)

That's really good stuff. Old school is filler onto metal. As long as it is good clean solid metal it should be fine. Many recommend putting filler over epoxy so it is sealed underneath. I still prefer putting it on clean roughed up metal myself. But that's just me.

Thanks for the reply. That’s what I’ll be doing then. I ended up speaking with the evercoat rep for my area, Jeff (northeast). Very helpful. He said just check the epoxy specs to ensure it cures for the proper time before applying the filler. I’m using the PPG DP LF which calls for an hour min.

A lot of people are using spi epoxy. I am using it now on my cuda.  Always used ppg before.   Everyone says it's good stuff and the cost is wasaaay below the ppg.   https://www.southernpolyurethanes.com/pricing

Unless you've got the whole car blasted and epoxied, I usually do the main bodywork on bare steel, then epoxy and putty on that. Good luck!

Thanks man. Makes sense. I’m doing my best to blast and epoxy sections at a time. The mobile blast guy in my area wanted $2k to do the whole car so.... I’m getting by. Wish I could’ve done the whole car at once but ... I spent some of the money on a 60 gal compressor and doing it slowly. Thanks for the input!!

You're welcome and I hope it goes well for you. You may also want to purchase a half dozen tubes of good seam sealer. After I'd blasted mine and changed all the sheet metal, I went under the car and sealed every seam where two pieces of metal came together because that's exactly where the rot starts. Just my  :2cents:
