U bolts

Hello All,

I recently ordered repro U bolts for my 8 3/4 rear end. I literally destroyed the threads trying to get them to go into the holes of the shock plate. I realized that they are a little to narrow at the top because they spread wide open when I put them on the axle. I had a big pair of vise grips trying to bend them to get them to fit. I compared them to the originals and they are just a bit too narrow at the top. The only reason I am replacing them is because they are pitted. Does anyone make repros that fit? or should I look for originals. and yes, I made sure the shock plates are on the correct side.

Very common part. I got mine from Napa. You evidently got the wrong size. Assuming you have 8 3/4 rear, you need a ubolt with a 3" ID.

You definitely need the U-bolts to conform to the same size as the diff housing. however, if they do that and still don't fall into the shock plate holes I'd suggest putting the nuts on before using a BFH to "adjust" the stems so that they DO fit in, that way you won't damage the threads. Be advised, my oem bolts into my oem plates wanted some screwing with before they went back together. If you have a decent oxy/acet torch, you can apply heat to make the whole job easier. Good luck
