E-Body Shaker hoods

Not sure if anone here reads Mopar Collectors Guide, and keeping in mind who I am challenging here, I tread very lightly....  :P

In the last issue of MCG, Galen Govier's column mentions E-body shaker hoods.  Here's what he says:

- The earliest 70 Challenger R/T with a shaker was built on August 17, 1969.  It is a JS23R0B car.
- There are five more, with the last one built on Sept. 28, 1969.  All of them are JS23R0B R/T hardtops.
- From that date on, no shaker was found on any Challenger.
- Not a single Hemi Challenger R/T Convertible is known to exist with a factory installed shaker hood!

So, essentially, he says that no Challenger other than a Hemi had a factory shaker, and no Convertible Shaker Challenger is known to exist.

He goes on to say:

- To date, there are two documented 1970 'Cudas with the 440-4bbl and a shaker.
- There is one documented 1970 Challenger R/T with a 440-4bbl and a shaker.

This is the kicker - He says that NO authentic 340s and NO 383s with the shaker hood in 1970 are known to exist. Challenger or Barracuda!

Now, I have other sources that say this:

The shaker hood option was limited to Hemis when production began, and was later expanded to include models with the 440+6 in late June 1969, and the 340 and 440-4bbl mills in late July or early August 1969.

This source also states:

- 664 Hemi 'Cudas were built, and 14 were convertibles
- A total of 1,391 Barracudas (including Hemis) were built with the shaker hood, and only 22 were ragtops.
- Only 189 1970 Challengers were built with the shaker hood, of which 15 were S.E. models and 5 were convertibles.

Does anyone see the discrepancies here?

Since I am a restoration freak, and numbers are a big deal to me, I think it'd be cool if all of you could post partial VINS and fender tags for any shaker cars you know for a fact are factory.  I'm sure there's got to be some interesting things out there. It's not that I want to prove anyone wrong, it's that I just need to know for my own freakish addiction to E-bodies.  ::)

Hey Chryco,

Do you happen to know "TrapMate"'s VIN?
(Hanners Car)

I have some awesome photos of the car from 1974 before Hanner bought it up to while he had it during the 1980's and 1990's. (in storage of course) By year end all will be available to see.

Do you know if Hanner still has it?

Curious. Thanks!
WH

My mothers cousin has a all original, including green paint, white vinyl top,and white interior 71 challenger with a 440 six pack pistol grip 4-speed with the shaker hood,he is the second owner, and I worked for the original owner so I know the car is legit.I think the car probably ownly has about 20,000 miles on it.It is located in upstate NY.

Cuda,

No inside joke... according to Galen, a 383 Chally shaker car is not supposed to exist....

But Chryco says that one does...  ;)

Well, well... whaddya know...  ;)

Check out Galen's column in the latest MCG... He finally admits that he was wrong.  There are in fact, documented and REAL 1970 383 shaker Challengers...

;D ;D

And he asks those of us who know of others to let him know where they are...  ::)

I found the comment from Galen to be questionable regarding the 1970 'cuda.  I good freind of mine half-ass "restored" a 1970 383 4 speed 'cuda convertible back in the early to mid-1980's.  He only bought the car to re-do it, then sell it.  He did a quicky resto on the care, but that was back before these cars were fetching any wild prices like they are today.  Anyway, the car had a shaker hood, ended up being painted hemi-orange (with black shaker bubble and flat-black tail panel), had a white interior with no console, white convertible top, and chrome bumpers.  I think the car was originally an orange/white/white car with an original shaker.  The car was redone and sold in central New Jersey.  I'm trying to track down info on this car, but it's difficult because my friend now lives in Florida.  The point of all this is that I think it was an original 70 383 shaker convertible, but I need to try to get to the current owner.  Should I get to the bottom of this, I'll post my findings.
