Problem in Wiring
« on: July 28, 2018 - 07:01:47 PM »
I put all my wiring in my 70 Cuda today. Everything seemed fine. Brake Tailights Side Markers interior licence plate. The signals work but thet flicker in between flashes. Also there are 2 wires in the trunk a dark blue which is for the fuel gauge and a black one that it says is for the trunk light I don't know if the car had a trunk light could it be a ground. And I don't have any dash lights. My cig lighter works my glove box light the fan  the wipers but none of my gauges work like the temp, oil clock I think I missed a ground when I put the dash back in. Anyone got any ideas but any of this Thanks Dirk

As I recall the instrument cluster grounds through the dash frame, if you painted the frame you lost your ground (very common issue). You can crawl under there and run a temp ground from something on the firewall to the cluster and have someone look to see if they come on. Also, there should be a ground wire (black with a ring) on the right side of the dash by the glove box (I think), this gets grounded behind the lower bolt that holds the dash frame to the side cowl. Make sure this this is clean and making contact.

As to the black wire, I would first use a test light or multimeter to ensure there isn't power to it (check with the ignition off, then on acc and then with the lights on). My 70 Challenger manual shows the black wire running to the trunk light as only one wire which means it should be hot. Even if your car didn't have a trunk light, that wire may still be present in the original harness as they may have used what they had at the time light or no light. Test it regardless, if its hot and you don't want to run the light, just tape it or zip tie it out of the way.

Good luck. I am doing wiring myself currently and I can attest to ground issues. On these old Mopars, many items are simply grounded through whatever they attach to and when everything was new it obviously worked. After rebuilding them, we tend to paint everything and/or do not get good contacts with the various fasteners. This is one of the reasons I ran a dedicated ground cable to the back of my dash, to ensure it was getting the connection it needed. You cannot have too many grounds and in fact the more you have the less problems you tend to experience.

Have fun.  :2thumbs:

70chall440 I ran a ground from the battery to the cluster that didn't work. I was wondering on the Cuda with the ralley dash it has the light panel with 3 bulbs is that what lights the instruments or do they each have a separate bulb in behind. Just want to make sure before I pull out the cluster Thanks DirkCuda

The bulbs on the cluster are for left and right turn signals and parking brake. The light bar above and in front of the instrument cluster is what lights it. A rallye cluster has 4 bulbs in that bar and a standard has 3.

Are you talking about the 3 bulbs that are on the cluster itself? The ones that come from the back of the cluster, has 3 white plastic tubes on the front? If so, then it is normal, they all are like that.

What I was referring to is the light bar; its the plate that bolts into the dash above and in front of the installed instrument cluster. If your light bar only has 3 bulbs, then its out of a non-rally dash or if you are sure it is from the car, it could have been a mistake at the factory. Iv'e converted many E bodies from non-rally to rally dash and have used the 3 bulb bar (to include the Cuda I am working on now).

The light bar is the one im talking about. It was in the car when we bought it back in 2003. As far as ino its the right one but the car came from Texas so who knows. So with 4 it would light up the clock gauges, tack , an speedo or would the tack be on its own being hooked to the coil.

Ive got the bezel all loose but just cant get it off around the speedo does the steering column really have to be lowered. I just got to get at the cluster. The body shop put the dash pad on but never run the light panel wiring threw. I can see the 3 bulbs up there thanks

Yes, the steering column needs to be lowered.

If you only have 3 bulbs it isnt a huge deal, the idea was that each bulb provides light on one of the gauges, but the one you are missing will be most likely the far left one which would provide light for the clock.
