Need opinions & advice on tranny issues
« on: September 09, 2018 - 03:23:27 PM »
Hey guys,

First wanted to say thank you in advance!!

So, I took my car in to a local shop to have some front suspension work done and the day after I get my car back, I've got transmission issues.

73 Cuda (true car) with 4 speed 727...all numbers matching.

Driving down the road after driving about 10 miles and I literally lost my clutch pedal.  Specifically, I couldn't dis-engage / push the clutch pedal all the way down, so I immediately pulled over.  It has absolutely nothing to do with the engine, which started fine after I shut it off.

I had resistance when trying to get the car into any gear (with the pistol grip shifter).  So, I pumped the clutch pedal a bunch of times and then magically, it lightened up and I got the pedal back.  Put it back into 1st and drove it about 10 feet before it did it again.

Could it be missing tranny fluid or something?  I wonder if those a-holes drained my trans fluid?  Anyone else ever had these problems?

It's stock...I'm sending you a photo of the underside when I first bought the car.  If there's no fluid, what on earth would cause this then?

Sounds like the pressure plate or disc has failed..... I've had a number of pressure plates fail & cause similar problems... I've had one disc failure where the damper spring broke & got trapped between the pressure plate & disc cause a similar problem...

I owe you a beer!  Maybe a case of beer.  I'll let my mechanic know.  Any ballpark on how much something like this should cost to repair or did you fix it yourself?

You called it.  Damper spring got stuck in between pressure plate and disk.  : ) Thanks again for the great advice!
