Car not starting
« on: May 03, 2019 - 10:44:56 AM »
I don’t post here, but am a frequent visitor who needs some help.

My 72 Challenger 340 isn’t starting. Confirmed battery is good and attempted boost didn’t work.

When you turn the key nothing happens, no clicking and no dash lights. This tells me it’s not a battery, starter or alternator issue.

I’ve had issues in the past with this happening and cleaned the relay and all was ok. Most of the time I just need to hold down the key for 10-15 secs and it starts.

Guess Yellow didn’t appreciate going into storage this winter 😐

Any ideas on what this could be and how I can fix it?

Not a mechanic by any means, but I can dabble. I live in Canada, not many mechanics around here that will still touch an older car or that I fee comfortable touching the car.

Thanks —

Rob

Is the main ground from the battery corroded where it connects to the body?

sounds like your ignition switch (due to the "hold down for several seconds" comment). Could be the relay, try jumping it (main lug go the lower connection with the screw slot in it). Just use a screw driver to connect them, it is going to spark, so don't get surprised. Have the key on and work the throttle by hand and see if you can get started. If it starts or acts like it wants to, its the switch itself.
