FiTech 30003 install
« on: August 14, 2019 - 10:49:18 AM »
Hi all! Been gone for a long time but contrary to unpopular belief, I ain't dead yet.
Yes, I want something. I'm soliciting help. I'm on an adventure. Got tired of vapor locks on Woodward and poor starts and figured I needed either a new carb or EFI so I bit down hard and bought a FiTech EFI (400hp) for my 340. I put in a Holley Sniper EFI tank with internal 255lph pump, new stainless fuel lines, and an Edlebrock Air Gap manifold. I kept it ass simple as I could to start by forgoing the ignition control option. I didn't change the stock electronic ( orange box) ignition and I think this is where my frustration comes in.
Initial startup was ugly. Would NOT start. Couldn't resist putting my foot on the pedal. Bad decision. Some backfires. Some FIRES! However I did manage to get it running twice but it ran very poorly. After much reading and studying of wiring diagrams I think I've boiled it down to the connection of the FiTech ECU specifically the white and blue wires.
At this point I have the white wire connected to the balast resistor bit I think I might have chosen the wrong side. I have the blue wire connected to the (-) side of the coil but I think that was the wrong choice cause I DO have the stock electronic ignition.
I'm going out now to check my timing for the third time. Im also going to temporarily connect the white wire to the battery (a FiTech Q&A suggestion) and see if It helps.
As for the blue wire (tach) I'm at a loss but I do believe I've got it wrong. That's where you guys that have been through this already could help me out. Id greatly appreciate anyone with a successful install lending some advice!

By the way, I did download the ECU logs and send them to FiTech technical support 3 days ago but they haven't bothered to respond other than an automated acknowledgment telling me how important I was and how I would hear from a technician within 24 to 48 hours.

Be back in a little while!

I have installed this system on my 52 B3B, however I am running an aftermarket wiring harness, but I am running a Mopar electronic ignition system. I will have to look and see where I have those wires running, but I will say that all EFI systems are very sensitive to input power, it has to be clean and strong. I believe you are correct when you say that the wires going to the ballast resistor are wrong. I also have a Holley/F&B system in my 70 challenger which has a factory harness and in that system I had to do away with the ballast resister.

As for the tach, it needs a signal and if you are running a Mopar system, I would believe the positive side of the coil would be a source but I would have to research it (I will look at my truck).

Pushing the gas pedal only allows engine vacuum to draw fuel into the cylinders as there is not accelerator pump, and having the wiring incorrect allowed sporadic firing which resulted in your backfires and fires.

Thanks for the feedback "70".
You're right! the FiTech ECU needs full clean power to the white wire. I still used the balast feed but i hooked it up to a relay that gives the FiTech power directly from the battery and it fired right up and ran great. For the record I have the blue wire connected to the same wire that powers the stock rally dash tach and it seems to be fine.

Thanks again for the feedback, I appreciate it!
