71 Cuda Windshield Question
« on: May 28, 2019 - 01:37:37 PM »
Am looking to replace the front windshield in my 71 Hemi Cuda. One place asked me if it was a gasket type or glue in type windshield, as they said they wouldn't touch a gasket type. I have no clue what type it is. Does anyone know which type of windshield it is? TIA

It's a "glue in" type. In the old days they used butyl tape- which looked like a roll of the round black licorice you may have eaten as a kid. Today, they use urethane, but you need to be on your game using it as you need to shim it to fit both in the hole and at the proper height so that your w/s mldgs fit the glass properly. Hope that helps!

He is right (of course), I used urethane on my 70 Challenger, had a guy come to the house and install it (twice because I broke the 1st one the same day it was installed.... :swear:). I used butyl tape on my 73 Cuda and most glass companies will not use it because the US DOT outlawed its use in passenger cars in general. That said, if you search around and talk to the glass companies and tell them it is a classic car they may use butyl tape for originality.

Now, I am sure people will jump on here and state that butyl is "not safe" and you could "fly out the window" but it was used for many years and I doubt you are using the car as a daily commuter vehicle, I would not hesitate to use it again.
