1 Wire Alternator
« on: May 14, 2019 - 01:59:41 AM »
I want to up grade my charging system to a 1 wire system. I'm not sure what to do with the wires from the original alternator and the voltage regulator. Do you bypass the charging gauge in the dashboard or is it OK since the alternator is going directly to the battery?  Any help would greatly appreciated.
Also thinking about changing headlights so they run off of a relay. Has anyone done this and did it help with the lights going dim and flashing when the blinkers are on?

Why do you want to go with a 1 wire system?

I have not installed a 1 wire system but I did research it and decided to go with a conventional system because I wanted an external regulator.

Yes, you can run the alternator straight to the battery but you should use a fuse or circuit breaker (based on the output of the alternator) between them and use very heavy cable (like #4).

The ammeter is a shunt, a resistor.  To read correctly, it passes all current.  As a resistor, it has been the source of fires over the years.  Increasing the alternator output increases that risk, and a fire extinguisher should never be Plan A.  I changed the alternator to an 85-110A, not a one-wire, coupled the under-dash leads, ran a 10ga and fusible link directly to the battery under the hood, and changed the ammeter to the upside down Sun voltmeter trick.  I also swapped to a Transpo adjustable regulator and set the voltage at about 13.4V. The voltmeter sits there like a rock, a/c, lights and all. Appearance wise, the gauge blends in well in the Rallye cluster, the alternator looks stock, the regulator is a good match, and the 10ga wire you have to look for.
