Wide wheels and suspension
« on: August 19, 2019 - 07:04:02 PM »
Hello All!
I have 10 wide cragars with n 50 15 pro trac tires on my 70 cuda. The tires do not fit in the wheel well and will rub on the quarter panel wheel lip if not raised (I know thats not the way to do it lol). I was thinking about air shocks, but if they fail you are stranded so I was wondering if there is an alternative to where you either make the rear suspension locked in place or if there is a coil over shock that will bottom out before the tire hits the wheel lip. I wasnt sure if there is a way to maybe take a bit of the inside of the cragar to create more backspace or not. Just seeing of anyone else has the same combo I have in the back. I love the day 2 look.

Oh I am sure this subject is going to bring out some haters... LOL

Basically you need to develop some blocks so that if the air shocks blow out you can get home as the wheel lips won't slam into the tires. It will limit your suspension travel (up) but that would be the safest way to do that part.

As far as getting the car up there in the first place, there are a number of options but none are really good. Air shocks would probably be the best choice or perhaps some long coil overs.

Thnks for the advice! I will make the "bottom out" blocks and use coil overs that adjust. and advice on where to get the coil overs? Im sure they make them for a cuda.

I remember reading about this issue in an old hot rod magazine. They said dont use to big of tires in the back and dont put decals in the windows. I'll never learn lol.

With coil over's you may not necessarily need bottom out blocks although they would not hurt I guess. As for where to get them, you are going to have to take measurements to determine what you need and then look at the various manufacturers since no one is going to list something like this; my guess is you will be looking at shocks designed for a pickup or something.

Of course the other option is to put flares on it or better yet is to mini tube it.

"Of course the other option is to put flares on it or better yet is to mini tube it."  OR, save a lot of misery and money and buy some wheels with the required backspacing (4.5-5.0") and not have to do any of those band-aid actions. Just my  :2cents: though.

What about shortening the axle? I guess that could be another option

so I aired up the front tire and it leveled out the car. It sits about a half inch above the back tire so I dont have to worry about it sitting on the back tires if the shocks fail. False alarm.
