New dash and gauges for '70 Challenger?
« on: May 13, 2015 - 12:54:09 PM »
I'm looking to replace the old dash and gauges in a 1970 Challenger when I start my project, where could I find matching gauge sets that are much more modern and is there anyone making dash and gauge combination sets? Also, I want power windows, and electronic door locks. New upholstery in the interior would be nice too.

You can design your own at speedhut, reasonably priced as well

I made my own cluster out of sheet metal. Its not pretty but gets the job done and its easy to remove. I primarily used Speedhut gauges, they are awesome. They usually have sales around all the holidays.

I also used speedhut gauges in a standard dash ( non rally)

Not being a master fabrication artist like Brad, I followed the path that a few had posted here prior and used a standard cluster and installed a set of 2 5/8" Autometer gauges.  I used led lighting in them.

The missing item is a tach.  If I were going to do it again, I would use Speedhut gauges and use the dual tach/speedometer option that they offer as mentioned by Crash340 in this link

Spartan040,
Like you I wanted to go with a newer gauge that looks at home in the original dash.
I bought a set of SpeedHut gauges and had a set of gauge bezels 3d printed from abs plastic.
I then added them to the original dash.
Here's the finished product.

I am in the process of building a new house and shop so installation of the gauges
are on hold till I get this construction completed.

Cheers!

:wavingflag: I am looking at a site called classic dash. they make a factory fit cluster and can use any autometer gauge to include a tach. it is picy but I like the setup. Plus they sell the harness to wire everything
:wavingflag:  Quit being offended by everything, I am sure you are doing something that upsets me, but I am not complaining about you!!! It is a free county get over yourself!

The fit is terrible, The panels have no built in support so they warp... After having owner these cars for close to 40 years I've seen lots of custom dash treatments, some look good, most don't... Some of the best have been posted in this thread... The Classic Dash stuff in print sounds good, the one I've seen in person was Carbon Fiber & I expected it to look really good.. Instead it looks cheap & cheesy... I'd suggest doing something with a stock bezel, either a Std bezel or a Rally Bezel.. I'd use the Speed Hut gauges, I have a set my self for a different project, they are very nice stuff... Very customizable, reasonably priced.. If Mickm could help with some of his cool bezels you'd be well on your way...

Hi Guys,
Sorry for the late delay but as I said, I am in throws of building a house and just now getting to check posts.

Yes, I still have the .stl files for the gauge pods and will gladly share if you have a way of getting them printed.

If there is interest, I have almost completed the complete dash with the new recessed pods in it. This way a completely new dash could be printed that would replace the original, but
that would be pretty pricey.

Let me know what you think.

Cheers!

Those bezels look great, I'd love the stl file of you're willing to share. A buddy of mine has a 3D printer at work and owes me a favor. I'll send you  a pm with my email. Thanks!

Dave-You have mail.  Let us know how your gauges come out.

dougs bs23- I used the "mopar" font SpeedHut has. I thought it looked close enough to the oem font.

Guys, due to my house building, I'm afraid it will be a while before I have the 3d model for the dash completed. I do have the original scanned and the
front, bottom and gauge pods all finished. I just need to do the attached features.

I'll post when I have it completed in case anyone wants to use it.

Cheers!
Mickm
