Engine Storage Concern / I Screwed Up!
« on: June 21, 2022 - 08:09:44 PM »
Hey Everyone, it's been quite a while since I have posted. We were moving right along on my build until just about a year ago when everything came to grinding halt. We had the engine built (360 magnum .040 over), transmission secured (Tremec 5 speed OD), and we were making great progress on body work. Even had the inside, engine bay, and jams all painted (Plum Crazy). Then, last July, I was in a fairly serious crash while driving for work. Right at the same time my wife and I were selling our home of thirty years, and downsizing to a cozy ranch with much less property and maintenance.

Sorry for all the back story. I tend to ramble. NOW FOR MY SCREW UP: While we were in-between homes, I had to put my car in storage. Anyone who remembers me knows that this is my first build, so I an NOT experienced. I WAS careful to spray a ton of fogging oil into the engine since I knew it would set for quite a while. However, I was so focused on that, and the move, that I completely forgot that we used straight water when we broke in the engine. No, or very little, anti-freeze. Well sure enough, when I got it out of storage a couple weeks ago, the center expansion plugs on both sides of the engine had popped out sometime over the winter.

I pray that I did not crack the block, and the plugs simply did their job. I don't see any cracks, but not sure if that means anything. Should I simply tap the same plugs back in, and run some water into the therm housing? Will it be obvious if I have a problem? As always, I appreciate your input. And please don't hate, because I already know how stupid this was. Thanks!

If you damaged it the results will be obvious when you put water in it.  Good luck

I have never installed expansion plugs before. Can you tell me if it is ok to reuse the ones that popped out over the winter? And is there a special tool that should be used? I realize that I can probably Google or Youtube all of this info, but I kind of enjoy the interaction on the forum. Haven't been on in a while, so hopefully a lot of guys are still checking in.......maybe?

Don't re-use the plugs. They're made to be a one time install. Get new ones and a schmear of sealant on the contact edges is a good thing. They can be a bit fussy to install, and there are purpose built drivers for them. But, a large socket that just fits inside the hollow of the plug can do the job. The critical part is to NOT drive them in too far. Start them evenly and perpendicular to their seat and just get them started into their holes. A larger socket of piec of flat plate can be used to drive the plug just flush with the block casting- and NO further, or you'll be starting all over again. Before you replace them, get a real good light and get down and look the block holes over very closely for cracking. Who knows, maybe you ducked a bullet here. Good luck and check You Tube for some vids of the deal.
