looking for ideas on what to check for.  We got engine running good, 1st, 2nd, 3rd work-  but in reverse, nothing happens....no trans sound, no bump...nothing.  Reverse and neutral act the same.   :dontknow:  Ideas?     (sorry this is not a cuda/challenger question)  Thanks!

You could try adjusting the bands.
If you do that might as well put in some new fluid and a filter.

Thanks BlueBucket -  anyone else?
What is the most likely problem, and how would you fix it.

Other than the bands, maybe the linkage needs adjusting.

i had a similar problem with a 904, years ago....It turned out to be a problem with the 1st-reverse band or something....I had the tranny rebuilt....i you go that route, I would consider the A-518 transmission as a replacement......especially if the car is gonna be a crusier.

Why?  Is the 904 unreliable?  Seems they were used for many years.  As long as you are not putting serious hp thru it, shouldn't the 904 work just fine?

In answer to your question Red, viewing the range charts for the 904 indicates the Low/Reverse band and rear servo are only used for reverse and manual low ranges.  Most likely, this band or servo has failed.  Check for burned smell or clutch material/debris in pan.

The only reason that I would change to the A-518 is for the overdrive feature. Im guessing that a 904 would be ok depending on the Hp of the powerplant. And the only downfall of the A-518 would be the modification of the floorpan and crossmember.

Red & Red & Pixie,

Figure out the tranny yet ?  I see the drivetrain is out on another thread.  Let me know if you need another tranny, I have a 727 sitting behind a 360 out of a van I'll never use.

The 518 is a 727 with od. which you probably already knew....the 518s will work alright in a light car but i know in the trucks they go out soon...my dads went at 105K mine went at 140k another guys went out at 50k.....if she doesn't abuse the tranny it will last awhile...but is the cost of getting a good tranny and then modifing everything to work going to be worth it....a good 518 will run anywhere from 700-3000 dollars...a core will run about 100-500 dollars....if you get a core and then someone to rebuild it...you might as well just rebuild the 904...or a 727..727s are cheap but then you have to get a drive shaft made.... for the 727 or 518...if i was you i'd just rebuild the 904 run it save money for a 518 or 727 rebuild it then stick the 904 up on a shelf or sell it...also to answer your question....i bet the rev. band is messed up like everyone else is saying...or what if the valve body has a crack in it and its not building enough pressure for just the revers band??? anothing to think of..
