Hand Resting
« on: August 08, 2005 - 12:14:49 PM »
This may sound like a strange question but the reason I'm asking is so I can show my wife that I'm just not blowing smoke and that I have a valid point. Some times when she is driving our Challenger w/pistol grip 4-speed she will rest her hand on the handle. I know that I heard somewhere that resting your hand there was a bad habit to get into because of something todo with the syncros in the tranny. Is this true or am I really blowing the smoke?
Thanks

I saw this subject for the first time somewhere else and was thinking WTF?
Not only this but the car in question was a Slap-Stik. I though it was to do with in an accident control the vehcilce (two hands) etc

I have been told the same thing about resting your hand on shifter,  it will wear on the syncros, but I think that this more for 4 speeds....

The guy must have meant it was a bad habbit for him to rest in any trans car.  ;)

OK, I'll share an experience.  :-[ :-[ :-[

I have an automatic with a slap-stick setup. I used to just rest my hand on the shifter while driving. Then one day while cruising the highway, I accidently down shifted it.  :o :o :o  These old cars aren't like the new ones.  :grinno: Today's cars will ignore you if you do that, or stall out. Well... my car happily went down to second gear at 70 MPH. Care to guess how scared I was at the roar I heard from the engine???   :eekbig: :eekbig: :eekbig:

I never heard of that NZ. Apparently my car thinks 70 MPH is safe to downshift.  :eekbig: :eekbig: :eekbig: :o :o :o :eekbig: :eekbig: :eekbig:

I thought it didn't. I think your shift kit from TransGo enables this function.  ;) :grinyes:

Correct , holding the shifter while crusin will cause premature wear in a 4 spd , it is not the syncros that wear but the actualy shfit Fork inside the trans , I can always tell if a trans was driven a lot like this when disassembling a trans , 1 side of the fork will be very worn [usualy 4th ]
