It's looking more and more like the carb.   I'll try to tune it  tomorrow.    I am overwhelmed by all of the help in just a few hours.   Thanks guys!!

I've read articles about guys having to drill a small hole, like 1/8th inch diameter in the two primary
throttle blades to help get the fuel to draw down from the idle circuit because under certain condtions
there might not be quite enough air flow past the closed off idle discharge slots. I don't remember
enough of it to say what the "certain conditions" might be. Just thought I'd throw that out there
because it sounds a bit familar. Goodluck!  Jeff

the certain conditions are long duration cams & low manifold vacuum at idle

kind of sounds like the choke might be kiling it. i had that problem with a choke that wouldnt open and kept killing the car. might want to look there.

can you give us a vacum reading at idle. Idle = around 850 - 950 rpm

Have you adjusted the idle mixture screws for the highest idle on each one?
What do you have the ignition timing set at?
What torque converter stall speed do you have.

If you want to check for a vacuum leak, after trying to adjust idle mixture, slowly cover the carb air horn with a rag while engine is idling, if RPM goes up you have a lean mixture probably caused by a vacuum leak.  You can make sure your brake booster isn't leaking by pinching the vacuum hose shut and monitoring RPM for a fluctuation.

Hope this helps.

You gotta give way more info here...

What size cam?
What size stall TC and rear gear?
What is your timing at initial, total, and what RPM?
What does the car idle at in gear?
What is inital vacum in gear?

From the start I would say your timing is way off.  You might also have too much stall in the TC too.  WAY more info is needed here to help.
