Dash resto problem - hope I haven't stuffed it?
« on: August 08, 2005 - 12:01:36 AM »
Well the other night I thought I would clean all the dash panels to remove many years of dust and dirt.  Not really thinking about it too much, and assuming they were all plastic, I just started to wash them in the kitchen sink with dishwashing liquid.  The plastic edge panels were Ok but the textured paint radio surround has turned white!

Needless to say I didn't wash any more.  I'm assuming that the paint has absorbed some water or that the chemicals in the detergent have discoloured it.  If it is the first I'm hoping it will dry out in time and return to its original colour - if it is the second then I may have to paint over it to regain the colour but retain the texture.

Anyone had this happen to them - had a happy outcome?? (hopefully)

Could it have been the hot water making the plastic bend and turn white? Seen it happen before.  :-\

Doesn't sound like much hope.  :'( They are however easy to find on eBay etc.  :D

I stepped into this bear trap when I tried to clean up an old Rally dash bezel.  :stomp: The round area past the 4 silver rings all turned funky. I just repainted it to make it look semi-normal again. I think the plastic must be allergic to water. Go figure.  :dontknow:

The plastic itself is fine, it is the painted texture finish that has changed so may have to repaint it - live and learn.

Of course thiss now means I have to paint all the relevant panels to keep them looking the same and then rechrome around the instruments :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:
