Hey A-body guys
« on: August 07, 2005 - 11:20:04 AM »
I have this steering column and it's out of a 1970 duster with a slant six and a floor shifter.
Someone sez the column is set up for a 3-speed manual column shifter but as far as I know it never had one and I think it is for all manual shifting A-bodies from 1970 to 1976

Who is right?

I will attach pics with the column and the hump I cut out of the car

Did Dusters ever come with manual shifters on the column? Or is that extra linkage on the steering shaft
for the key lockout and this guy full of Sh!t

I would say it was for the key lock.  You had to put the cars in reverse to get the ignition key out.

BTW, column shifters have to sets of shift levers at the bottom, not just one.

So Is there a difference between the 4spd floor shifter column and the 3spd floor shifter column?

I'm no help in identifying what's in the pics but i can say with 100% certainty that /6 Dusters could be had with a three-on-the-tree. When i worked at Roebuck Chrysler-Plymouth part of 79, the two cars they had (both early Dusters) for various errands included one with a /6 with three-speed manual on the column. I nearly got run over so many times in that thing before learning to coordinate my hand and feet :banghead: :banghead: ;D

Thanks Rusty
It seems unlikely that Mopar would build a Duster with a column shifter and a shifter hump on the floor
right :???:

They had the previsions for the slap-stik in E-Bodies so maybe they'd do the same templates for the A-Bodies?  :dontknow: :???:

I don`t know about the differences in the columns but I learned to drive a standard on my fathers `70 Duster with the original /6 and 3 spd on the floor.

3spd column shifters were available. no 4spd column shifters. Column shifts had to sets of shift levers at the bottom, not just one. Hope this can end the discussion.
