heads?
« on: September 20, 2005 - 01:05:11 PM »
what would be the best way to go for heads on my 383 (bored to a 391)?  i want the car to be a driver still but i figure a little flow means a little more power.  i believe my compression is around 9.5 or so.  i havent won the lotto yet so money is a large factor in my decision process.  i was also thinking that maybe i should go get my heads done at a shop instead of buying a whole new set.  any ideas?

There is a Mopar porting kit that is very inexpensive.....about $20.00 and basically allows a resonably competent person to open up the throat of the valves under the seats.......you simply cut out a the template and put into the valve guide holes and you grind off enough ( alittle bit at a time) until the template slips down into the opening.  then you can finish out with a little sand paper to smooth out the grinding you just did........   You then have the valves grind with a three angle valve job.....a 30 degree back-cut above the original 45 degree face..............with stock 2.08 valve you can acheive 25% or more better flow..........this works better than buying 2.14 intake valves and simply installing........    read the following..........dont worry if you dont understand every little thing they say........i had to read it a few times.......but you asked for <inexpensive> improvements without cashing in...........read this first......   www.moparmusclecarmagazine.com/techarticles/5115/    and then part two is the same except 5118/         again not hard to do, and since you will have the valves ground and reseat the heads anyway not much more than you would already spend anyway.    Remember stock 2.08 valves with this work done and the porting templates will flow better than 2.14 intake valves stock with nothing else done.........and the 2.08 stock valves flow better anyway at lower lifts.....      ps........the absolute worse case scenario is that you f#@k your heads.......which you shouldnt do and big block heads are dirt cheap everywhere on ebay........$100 to $200 all day long.....  so just do it and chillllllllllll

I did this home porting and it took about a day.  Once you start using the templates it becomes pretty obvious where the extra metal is.  By the time you pay someone to port the heads and rebuild them you could nearly buy a new aluminum set.

WEll you really need to have air pressure and use a small cheap $20.00 die grinder.........you then buy a carbide bit to grind the metal out of the head  fairly quickly........again not hard to do.  When you have ground enough out of the throat the template will slip in........then to finish out the head once your finished grinding, you can finish out with 80 or 100 grit sandpaper to take off any kinda rough edges and smooth out...........if you can borrow a small compressor you got it made.

You could probably use an electric die grinder but they are not cheap.  An air compressor is great because the tools are so cheap.  An industrial abrasive supply store can sell you the carbide cutters and rolls, mandrels, etc.  I bought some of the stuff at House of Tools also.
