Green Bearings

 I was thinking about installing a set because my seals are leaking. Anyone try these yet and do think its a good idea :wave:

Forgive me, but what what exactly is "Green Bearings" and how will replacing bearings repair leaking seals?  :dontknow:

I am using them on my Cuda. I had to change over from the old adjustable style to these when I installed Wilwood disk brakes. The only real difference is, you would not need to adjust the crown collar thing-a-ma-jig anymore, because the axles would now have a set install depth. There would be no performance gain, or longevity difference, by switching over to the green bearings. If you know how to adjust the old style bearings and are comfortable with them, just stay with them. Note, I had to shorten one of my axles by about 0.200" when I installed green bearings to allow my axles the proper internal clearance. Just a warning to heed if you are thinking about making this change for the heck of it. ;)

Green bearings are also known as snap ring bearings. They use a snap ring to set the depth of how far your axles go into your axle housing. They are not adjustable, which makes it easier and more consistent to install axles. The bearing doesn't do the sealing, it still relies on separate seals to handle leak control.

Okay, I couldn't tell from the original post what bearings lime70 was talking about.  I now realize the post was about rear axle bearings.   :dupe:
It appears from your description that original bearings have an axle endplay adjustment where the "green bearings" do not.
So, does anyone have any idea why they are called "green bearings"?

Green bearings are ball bearings, the original Mopar bearings are rollers. the rollers take lateral stresses better than the ball type bearings. Thats the forces the bearings see during turns. That said, for the vast majority of our cars, green bearings are fine. Now if i was going road racing, or driving a lot of miles per year, i'd stick with the rollers. My friend wiped a set of "Green" bearings out in his pickup...at about 40k miles.

if it is just the seals that are leaking & your brgs are OK I would just replace the seals for a LOT less then the cost of the brgs & installation

 The seal that I have that leaks is the one on the axle and I am afraid that on along trip that all my bearing grease will run out and the bearing will go dry :eekbig:

in most cases the inner oil seal washes oil thourh the outer seal & the outer seal even if it is worn will keep heavier grease in no problem

1970 318 bored .060 over edelbrock performer intake ported and polished 360 J heads 2.02 intake 1.60 exhaust double springs carter hi cap fuel pump edelbrock victor series water pump MSD 6AL flotech headers

a ball brg / green brg will not handle the side loads like a tapered roller brg , if you can use the factory tapered brgs it is a better way to go
