so it's not an e-body, does it still deserve a chance?
« on: November 06, 2005 - 03:20:30 PM »
Here's what I'm trying to work with now.... I want to say it's a 1980? Aspen...... Aint the best looking style car, but hey, it was free.... Anyway, I've been trying to find this answer out for a little while, but no one seems to know for sure, what body is this year Aspen? Anyway, what it is right now is a car that sits around with not much of a purpose. From the factory it is: 2 door, blue interior/exterior with front/rear bench seats, and a colum shifter. It is a Slant-6 with auto tran's and what ever rear axle. Now it has AC, power steering and power brakes.... It has front disc brakes. Any questions so far? Like I said, not much of a purpose, and is far from anything power wise performance. What I'd like to do is based on some information that I saw somewhere once, these cars came with the 6er, a 318 and a 360, other than this though..... Anyway, what I'd like to do is get ahold of a 318, change a few things, and put it in this car. Now I would like to run an A-518 (unless I am mistaken, this is a 4 speed automatic tran's, right?), and an 8 3/4 rear axle 489 case with a 3.73 gear (if it's a 4 speed tran's). I'd like to try and keep the AC, and the Power Steering though..... Being that I'd be going from an Slant-6 to a sb 318, I'd have to change the exhuast, I would want to run tubular headers, an X pipe, and small sized mufflers (I was thinking maybe the Flowmaster Hush Power 2 mufflers, or something like those). Then there's the oil pan, depending on body style, will probably depend on what oil pan will be used, but I'd want an 8 qt though, and a high volume oil pump. Now, being the car has a few electronic items on it as far as ignition and all, I'd probably run an MSD set up. There will more than likely have to be aftermarket gauges b/c of what year the car is and all.... That's just a little bit of what I'm looking at.

Aspens were F-Bodies, but a pic would help(LOL). Welcome aboard. Hey, we all started somewhere in our Mopar past. Mine was with a 74 A-body Dart.

I'll try and get a pic when I get the chance, being that I work construction during the day, well...... BTW, my first Mopar was a '69 Charger R/T with #'s matching 440, built 727 TF and 8 3/4...... It just sold, had for a few years, and someone came along with enough money at the right time, I already miss it. The 440 got a 509 purple cam, Holley Street Dom intake, and a Street Demon carb (750cfm), it was turning quite a bit better......

Schumakers May have mounts to put the small block into the F body
I would swap in the 360 over the 318 , it has more torque , not sure the dual exhuast will work though , I know the Mirada had th efuel tank over to one side so you may have to run a duallll into a largew single exhaust

Those were interesting cars.  Didn't Plymouth/Dodge make a "kit car" body kit for it to make it look like a Petty race car?  Weren't they kind of light cars?  Ideal for a V-8 conversion.  I agree with Chryco, why not go for the 360 instead of a 318?

Here's a fun "Kick your Ass-pen" car.  Looks plenty fast!

My Aspen had dual exhaust, the gas tank was in the middle.
It was a rusty 318, 4 speed car. They handle pretty well.

They do carry the conversion mounts for this. I'd rather go with the 318 over the 360 so on a more distant run, I can still have some gas milage. Plus, isn't the exterior dimensions a little smaller on the 318 rather than the 360? As for dual exhuast, I'm planning on dropping the gas tank, and just run a fuel cell, and shaving the gas cap area (sorta like shaved door handles), then there should most certainly be enough rom for duals. Now as far as body kits go, I think that Mopar did have some kind of a body kit available as a performance stand point for these, I think those came with the 360's.

Here's a pic of a one iof there kit cars.  I think you're right.  Only 360 cars had it but from what I understand you could buy the kit from the dealer and put it on any Aspen/Volare.

Here's a link to some info: http://www.allpar.com/model/aspen.html

the more torquey 360 may actually get better milage
the external dimentions are identical between the 318 & 360

Thanks for the website, I checked it out, Ill have to bookmark it. As for the 318/360, every 360 that I've been around has had poor gas milage, now yeah I know that we are talking about performance in power here, and when you go that route you usualy loose gas milage, but the less the better....... I would imagine that the 360 does have more torque and such, but I guess I'm gonna have to weigh the differences?

most 360 s get poor milage becuase of the polution controls , low compression & poor cam grind designed more for emissions
with increased compression & better cams the 360 does well

Well, that is one thing I didn't throw into the equasion....ooops. I guess the 360 it shall be then..... And so the fun begins of pricing things, and such.
