It's the whole combo that makes or breaks it.  On the cars you listed you had a 440 (no chance), two cars with 3.55 gears, and a 4x4.  None of those are set up for mileage.

If you have a small block, shallow gears, AND Overdrive, plus a bit of tuning, it's within reason.

I drove my Aspen 1500 miles once a month, so I was very concious of my mileage.  It is possible.  As I set up my Challenger, I'll be swapping to an A-500 with lockup, getting rid of engine driven fan, putting on a nine flowing exhaust, and some taller tires.  We'll see how it comes out.

At almost $3 a gallon in AZ, I don't need high performance, I want to be able to afford to drive it everywhere.

Besides... When you look this good, you don't have to be fast!

I thought my 16-18mpg in my 71 dodge was dang good! Way better than anyone else was getting.
Oh well..................................
As far as the 95 ram, they all suck the gas.

Actually it is good.  I have yet to top 16 on my Challenger, and it has 2.71 gears.

I built a 440 with 3.91 gear & the 833OD 4 spd , it gets low 20 mpg

I think you are right, with the right engine (big), tuned for low R's, and a overdrive, you should do well.
I want to put a 618 behind the 440 in my 69 truck, it has 3.55's, and I hope I get around 18.

Here is another thing about gas mileage.
It depends on where you are at, up here, the longest flat road I can think of is about 2 miles. (and they call it the flats)
Other than that, it is a constant hill climb.
