« on: January 26, 2007 - 07:35:51 PM »
Has anyone ever painted the hood like the decal instead of using the plastic decal?  How did it turn out?  Please post pictures if you ahve them.

I raised this same question in an earlier thread, because I want to do the same thing:
http://www.cuda-challenger.com/cc/index.php?topic=28698.0

From the responses I got (and what others have told me), it is VERY rare to paint that on.  It seems that almost everybody uses the decal.

If anyone has painted this blackout, please share what you have learned.  It would also be interesting to know what type of paint you used (Organisol??).

Way back in 1971 I went to Nashville Auto Diesel.  While there a fellow classmate bumped into my car. The body shop in the school did the repair and while they had to repair the bumble bee stripe, I also had them to do the hood. They used a flat black type of paint and it covered the entire bulge area, including  the back on either side of the little grill.  I am posting a pic but you really can't tell too much because my wife to be (and is) is setting on it.

Thanks for your response.  From your expreience what were the pros and cons of paint vs. decal?  How do you think a TX( would look instead of a flat black?

My painter used Medium Gloss Black single stage PPG. Looks great and exactly like the decal R/T blackout

My car was painted a week ago.  Because we have had some cold weather my painter has not had the opportunity to paint the bb stripe or the hood.  did your painter clear coat the decal area or is that necessary.  If it is not clear coated will it hurt the painter area if waxed in the future?  The reason I ask all of these questions is I think this decal area would look very cool in TX9.  I am however somewhat afraid that it will not.

Both the hood and side stripes on my 71 Challenger RT are painted on. I made templates off my old side stripes and painted them ppg single stage gloss black. My hood blackout was taped by me and I used a extra R/T hood decal I had and cut it out and then put it on the hood and taped around it. The hardest part is part of the R is hard to get the fine line tape to make the curves and stay stuck to the hood. I painted the blackout on the hood ppg single stage gloss black and never cleared it or the side stripes and the edge feels like a tape stripe. It took awhile to tape off the hood and if I find some of the pictures I have when it was taped off I'll post them so you can have a look before I painted it. I liked the way it turned out but some of the judges at car shows don't like the painted on stripes at all. This is why I have already bought new tape stripes and hope to repaint my Challenger RT in the next couple years as the paint is 15 years old and is starting to show it's age a little. I hope I'm happy with the tape stripes when I put them on instead of the painted on stripes.

No, I did not clear coat them. But my painter used some type of compound in the paint (don't know what it was) to prevent wax from streking and bleaching it. I could ask him what it was if you want. I copied my son's survivor Rallye BB 73Charger as it still has the original bulge hood decals and they are semi-gloss.
