another Chryco question
« on: October 25, 2005 - 12:25:39 AM »
We are having a discussion on another chat, and since you never seem to be wrong, I was wondering what your opinion is.
What, does, for say, a 318-3 mean? (cast into the block)
What is the difference between a -3, and a -2?
What does the dash mean?

it has to do with the casting process . either the # of times a mold is used to make the sand cast for the block or the # of pieces replaced as the sand cast is formed , I have seen them as high as -17 , in theory the lower the # the better the casting , less core shift

So, say, most of my heavy duty truck motors are either -3 or -12, from a 8 year span. No -2's, no -8's, just -3's and -12's.
Is there an explanation?

Hi, Check out www.440source.com, near the bottom of their home page they have several
tech articles. One of them is a explaination of Chrysler's part/casting number system. Chryco
is correct, it has to do with cast tooling repair/modifications or revisions. Another interesting
article has to do with engine block quality vs the casting date myths and bottom end strength
of the 440 vs the 400. I enjoyed reading it.  Jeff
