Rallye MIrror Glass Removal
« on: October 27, 2005 - 06:44:08 PM »
I just bought a pair of  rallye mirrors for my 71 Cuda and wanted to have them rechromed.  Any tricks or tips for removing the mirror glass so I can access the screws behind the glass. I would imagine that I wouldn't want that pivoting part chromed.  I am not sure how the glass is attached to the panel, with an adhesive or such.  Would heating it with a hair dryer free up the adhesive or do I have to resort to the good old hammer? Once again thanks for your help.

First remove the large screw from the underside of the base.  (It will take some finesse to reassemble the screw into the head when you're done but once you get the hang of it, it get's a lot easier.)  Removing that screw will seperate the head from the base and also release the rotating mechanism from the head.  From there you can see the back of the plate holding the glass.  The glass is glued on but it's not easy to remove, it's good glue. I'd be careful or you'll break the glass.  You may be able to use a solvent of some sort but then you have to be concerned about the silver on the mirror.

Romi,

Thanks for the reply, but I think my mirrors may be a little different.  I have two screws in the bottom attaching the base to the head.  When I removed them the two pieces separated but there is no hole or screw as you described.  Any thoughts?  Thanks.

Yes, there are 2 screws separating the base from the head. It is a little tough to get the mirror out of the head however. There are 2 screws holding the pivoting part to the head. If you tilt the mirror far to either side, you can see them. They are Phillips head screws, but I've had success with a somewhat smaller straight edge screw driver. You can try to hose them down with liquid wrench. You can't get a straight shot at either scew, but if you supply mucho pressure while you turn the screw driver, you should be able to get them out without stripping the head of the screws. It isn't much fun.

Sorry TOTAL, The mirrors I have worked on were A bodies. They use the same head but a different base.  I have a 71 Challenger with a floppy mirror so I have to take it apart to fix it but haven't done it yet so I didn't know they were that much different. Sounds like MEK has done it. I hope you post what you find because like I said, I have to take mine apart soon.
