Detailing, Polishing & Maintaining
« on: October 26, 2005 - 08:31:32 PM »

I haven't even got my Challenger back yet and I'm already thinking about spending hours on keeping her mint.

What are you guys using to clean the engine bay, interior & Chrome pieces etc?

 - What cloth/material for polishing engine bay pieces? (Maybe a towel, old shirt, retail products?)
 - What liquid or products are you using to shine and keep them clean? (Dish washing liquid, retail products, what brand?)

Cheers,
NZ440R/T

Always consider using a 100% cotton cloth for polishing .

Try going to this site and downloading the detailers handbook - www.griotsgarage.com
there is a link under the "car care" tab
This company makes it's own proprietary line of waxes , interior cleaners, wheel cleaners, has loads of excellent supplies, etc.
I worked for them for a christmas season as a second job, they actually mix the products up in house.
Good company to work for.  They have multiple customers who use their products exclusively and have cars that are shown
at the Pebble Beach Concours, which if you are unfamiliar, is pretty much the pinnacle of "high dollar" car shows in the USA.

Even if you don't want their products, read the detailers handbook. It's good info.

You must be rather excited to start driving it !

Hi,
Well back in the day i detailed highend cars like porsches,Jaguars, Bentles and cars like that... you get the picture. Well if you are just trying to keep the car clean the best way would be get a micro fiber cloth and spray glass cleaner" in the can not the pump and spray." Try not to use items like armor all between shows because if you are driving it and well it sits tends to collect dust faster.  Hope this helps some.
later,

Dont use turps, that may sound simple, but it happens.

We use foam glass cleaner on the glass and chrome.  We use Maquires quick wax for detailing the body using a cloth diaper (cotton, and no lint).  The interior, I use Maquires vinyl cleaner (this works great!).

Don`t use dish liquid on paint!!It strips wax and has stuff in it that is bad for paint.Use only car wash soap on the exterior and engine bay. Most degeasers will also strip wax so if you need to use bug and tar remover or a similar product wash re-wax the area afterwards.Don`t use a wax with cleaner in it too often as it has fine compound in it and removes a very small amount of paint, pure carnuba wax is the best.Same for chrome-use windex to clean instead of chrome polish as too much polishing will burn thru the chrome. Also do lots of smokie burnouts to keep the rear whell wells covered with rubber undercoating,LOL!

Nice touch Torred!  I'll have to do that more often!
