What is this aluminum tag found under my fender tag?
« on: October 23, 2005 - 01:34:22 PM »
Hi everyone,

Can anyone tell me what this 1" wide and 8" long aluminum tag is for (see photo)?  It was under my fender tag attached by the front screw and hanging down behind the wiring harness.  It was green like the original color, but part of it is now black, because someone painted over it doing an underhood blackout.  It has various words such as frame, door, paint, and others abbreviations in raised letters vertically.  It also has certain letters (N,V,U) punched out on it, as well as a crown(!).  I asked a couple of other Mopar buddies if they knew, but neither had ever had a car with one on it.   Help is appreciated.

Those are inspection tags that should have been clipped shorter as the car went down the assembly line.

Each station was supposed to remove the section of the strip that pertained to their area after they installed the part applicable (Door assm., Hood ... etc) and everything was torqued down, aligned ... etc

Normaly you'd only find a small piece of the tag left under the fender tag. Maybe the inspector was taking a smoke break when your car came down the line. ;D

Thanks for the information.  I figured it was something like that.

It's a little unusual for there still to be one there after all this time. If your car is an original restoration keep it there. If it is a resto-rod and you don't care, I need one. Mine is gone.

Actually yours is so long that it has information on your particular car, so I couldn't use it. But it is neat that yours is still there.

I am going to do a total restoration, so I am going to reinstall it. Thanks for all the help.

Just out of curiousity, have any of you found those assembly line tags anywhere else other than tucked up underneath the fender tag?  I found mine under the tag like this one was, but I was just curious if they stuck them anywhere else. (IE: tucked up underneath the dash on one of the pad studs.)

No, they were never placed anywhere else. That would have defeated the intended purpose.

It's not so easy to clip the tag if it's hidden up under the dash.  But having said that, as noted in this case where the tag was right out in the open where it was supposed to be, it never got clipped anyway! Such was quality control back in the day.

This just surprises the h%ll outof me that these tags have survived all this time. I am the third owner of my car but I would till think it would of been plucked off some ime ago.

My '73 has had the same owner since '74 and still has a 1991 Georgia plate on it, so luckily it didn't move through a lot of hands to disturb the originality of the car.  Other than front seats (bought a set from torredcuda  - THANKS!-), and a few bolt-ons (intake, carb, wheels, valve covers and air cleaner), the car is completely original, but needing a restoration.  It felt like the late 1980's again when I was buying this car, because I didn't think that there were any unrestored cars left to be had for a reasonable price.
