Fuel Pump Question?
« on: November 07, 2005 - 04:46:25 PM »
My 71 cuda 383 had a holley electric fuel pump when I got it.  When I rebuild the engine I would like to replace it with a stock mechanical type.  With no references as to what they look like can anyone possibly supply a picture or a part number or a source so I can order one.  The motor should be back from the shop any day now.  Thanks,  Ed

I don't have the P/N but you can still buy them at a dealership or even a parts store. Sounds like total BS to me!

Plum, Thanks for your reply.  Here are the two styles I keep coming across. The first is the new Mopar pump around $150 and the second one is listed as the same pump for my application but it runs about $40 but I have no idea what is correct for a '71 383. Any help would be appreciated.  Ed

They look like the same thing but you can see one is built cheaper and the Mopar pump is probably the high performance pump. The 40.00 pump should work fine but if you are trying to be correct in the term as it is used in restoring your car I'd go with the Mopar pump, if you are tight on cash, the 40 dollar one shouldn't leave you hitch hicking out on the road somewhere.

The pump on the right is the stock fuel pump. You should be able to get it at any parts store for less than $40. The pic on the left is a high-volume pump made by Carter. You can get one from Jegs or Summit. I believe the going rate is around $80 now. Keep in mind, you will need a pushrod too, if that has been removed from inside the block. Year-One is the only place I've seen them.

Thanks again guys...

Being mechanically-challenged..is there any advantage of the high volume pump versus the stock one.  I don't mind spending the bucks on the Mopar one, especially considering my spending to date on NOS parts and refurbishing my old stuff.  I  would just like to understand the differences and make the right choice the first time.

The high volume pump is just that a high volume pump. You can't get to much fuel in the system but it's nice to have the higher volume when you need it.

Trop,

Thanks for your reply. I thought that might be the case. I guess with my 383 4 BBL, it wouldn't hurt to have a good fuel supply pumping.

BS

Just what I have a 383 4 BBL in my R/T I will also go with the high volume when I rebuild this winter.
