#'s Matching ?
« on: October 29, 2005 - 12:01:20 PM »
I was curious as to how you tell if you have a numbers matching engine because just recently I found out from my dad that my uncle either dropped a new engine into or rebuilt the old one but he wasnt quite sure on that. So I was just wondering on that one because the shop teacher at my school gave me a wondful idea instead of rebuilding the engine I have right now. I can take this class at the local community college two days a week and the class cost $110 and I can learn how to rebuild and machine engines. Well he told me I should find a 360 and pull it out of a truck then build up that engine put it inthe challenger and set aside the 340 until I get ready to either sell the car or take it back to stock. So I was wondering if anyone also knows of a place where I can get a decent 360 engine? And my teacher is also giving me a letter of recomendation to apply at dodge because he knows alot of the people that work there so maybe by then end of this month when I turn 18 I will be working for them.

Sounds like a good idea to me

360s are cheap and you can build one to go at least as fast as a 340

Hopefully you will find that the 340 in your car is original but if it's no then sell it and use the money to build the 360

2 cents please   ;)

I have to agree here. If the 340 isn't original, you can do as much with a 360 that will be easier to find.

While these two people have a point I personally am not impressed with a 360. I don't know even if the 340 isn't original I would just build up the 340 engine because to me they seem to run a little better given the same mods as a 360. I know this because my father had a built 73 360 put in his Charger and now he has a lightly modded 340 and what a difference using the same tranny and gears.

The engine marking ( Vin Number) is on the passenger side of the engine just above the oil pan. It's a little bit more than mid way and towards the front. You will probably need to wipe of they area to see the Vin. If it matches  your Vin number you have a matching numbers engine.
Hope that helps.

It can be hard to get far enough under the car to see it.

If the mods are the same the 360 will always make more power because of the extra cubic inches.

They can be very tough to see. If you can get a trouble light that should help.

Look below the left cylinder head on the front of the block, this has all the engine numbers stamped there including the plant, build date, number produced and cubic inches.
