What were OEM bearings from the late 60's/early 70's made out of?

I just dont get it. I pulled a 318, out of a 2 ton truck, with over 300,000 miles. the bore is good, the crank is good, (steel) and the dang bearings are even good!
Unless it was rebuilt with a OEM gasket kit, and not bored or turned, the dang thing has the 315,*** miles the maintenance log said it did. (It did have a wore out double row chain)
