Wow, What A Small World
« on: November 12, 2005 - 06:52:17 AM »
Okay folks, I think I found the original owner of my Challenger and got this email in response to a sales ad I had over another Mopar Board.

Hi there,  My name is Clinton XXXI'm in Wyoming.  I believe the car you have is my old challenger.  I sold it to a BOB Watkins in Rapid City,  then it went to another guy who I can't remember his name.
Anyway.  I am interested in buying the car back.  I sold it to buy my wife her 70 Purple Roadrunner.  I bought the car when I was 17, and I have pictures of it before it was painted. My umber is XXX-XXX-XXXX.  I would like to call and visit about the car.  What are you asking for it?  I just r-mebered the guy's name was Randy.  I would love to own the car again.  Please let me know how to get -hold of you.  Thanks  Clinton Jones

Yeah, I asked him about some other things and asked him to sent me pictures. I'd be willing to sell it since I'm more in the market for something cheaper. But, its just weird since I was trying to get in touch with him in the first place. I already sent him some pictures to let him know his car is being taken care of.

That's cool, hope it all works out! Do you know anyone running around in a gold 68 Roadrunner that was originally purchased from Zion Chrysler Plymouth in Salt Lake City? LOL, I believe we'd all like to get one or two of those cars we use to have back again. Neat story and welcome to the site!! Let us know how this works out.

Yeah, we'll see. I'll give the guy a call in an hour or so. I already sent him the VIN and some pictures to see if it was his old car.

Welcome to the site and that's a pretty cool story.  I've made several attempts to contact the original owner of my '73, but have yet to get a response back.  The sad part is I know his name courtesy of an old school parking permit I found underneath the rear seat and have him pin pointed down to a phone number and e-mail, but I still haven't heard anything back.

Well, I talked to the guy it was great talking to him. Apparently he still has the original door that came on the car. Here's the rest I got from him in an email.

Hello again.  Yup it's my old car.  I still have the original
driver's door for the car with the Vin number on it.  This story goes back a
long ways.  Hope you don't mind the history lesson.
I bought the car in 1992 down in Cheyenne Wyoming for $2500.  I had just
graduated high school and was in Cheyenne for school.  It had a 73 440 in it
that ran Ok,  but it leaked oil and when I got it home here to Moorcroft I
drove it that summer and had the transmission rebuilt. It was an Automatic
with the B&M shifter.  It then sat for 2 years while I was gone away at
school and I got married.  I moved back to the ranch in 1995 and ended up
trading the car to a guy in Rapid City for a 70 Sublime 4 speed AirGrabber
road runner.
I didn't see that car again until 3 years later I got a call and the guy had
gone through a divorce.  While he had it he repainted the car with the
current paint job.  He replaced the driver's door. the Bulge hood and other
fenders were on the car when I bought it.  Also the fender tag was gone when
I bought the car in 92.  He had the 1/4 panels replaced and put the striped
and stuff on it.  I bought it back for $5000.  That is how I got the
original door back. He repainted the outside but never painted the trunk or
engine comartment.  I tried getting ahold of the guy who painted the car and
found out he had passed away so I could never track down a paint code to
match the paint.  So I pulled the worn out 440 and rebuilt the 383 HP that
is currently in the car.  My dad and I put it together and put it in.   I no
sooner got that finished and along came a really nice 70 Purple Roadrunner
with a White interior,  that My wife fell in love with.  The guy wanted
$13000 for the road runner and I only had about $6500 in the Challenger, so
I traded it to him and got the roadrunner for my wife for around $9000.  I
really broke my 6 year old son's heart,  he called it his challenger. We
still have the Roadrunner too.
Anyway,  This Bob Watkins got the car and put some centerline wheels on
it.  He put in a electronic ignition and worked his magic on the motor and
made it run pretty good.  He took out the 4 speed pedals and robbed the
rechromed bumpers and new exhaust tips and quite a few other nice parts to
put on a 70 challenger R/T that he was building.  I almost bought the car
back then,  but I was a little Dissapointed that he swapped out the nice
chrome and door panels etc..  that I decided to hold off buying the car.  He
wanted $9500 or something for it. I called him a month or so later and he
had traded it to Randy Smart for some Work on his house.
I met randy a year later and he had pulled the motor and detailed the
engine comp. and trunk and Added the accessories to the motor.  He came over
to Moorcroft and gave me pictures of the work he had done.  By then we had
another new Baby in the house, and had bought a 70 R/T Challenger and I just
couldn't buy it.  I didn't have any trading stock that randy was interested
on so I let it go once again.
I really love that car.  It probably is tired of being replaced by 70
Road Runners. I do have pictures of the car from when I bought it and when I
owned it the second time.  I would love to have the car back.  Would really
like to talk to about it.  It's gone up Quite a bit since I owned it, but I
have lots of stories to tell about that car.
Thanks for emailing me back,  I always like to catch up on my old cars.
I'm Mopar Poor  I have had about 20 of them.  I hate getting rid of them,  but a
few have slipped through my hands.  I always want to buy them back.  I think
Mr Watkins made a killing on welling the car to Randy.  He usually does, but
that is another Story.

Sounds like he already knows it will cost him some money. If he is willing to pay your asking price, go for it.

Sounds like you have a good story.  A friend of mine did about the same thing with his high school super bee.  He just about has it restored to better than when he had it then.

I know I would enjoy getting back a few that I have let get away.

Well, I guess he lost interest in the car. Probably the Mrs was like no. I'll still try to get a hold of him and see if it I can't get some older pictures of the car and more information. That's just me talking though.
