A friend is looking to buy a nicely restored, 4 speed, 1970-71 Cuda or R/T Challenger and has asked me my opinion on a number of cars he has seen for sale.
He has searched across the country and has found some decent cars and some real perfumed pigs.
He recently found a 1970 Cuda, BS23 car.
Originally a 383, non air, ralley dash, bulge hood, 4 speed car.
Per the fender tag the car was originally painted F4 green with green interior.
The seller owns a bodyshop and has done bodywork for 35 plus years.
The seller had the entire car sandblasted, top, bottom, and inside.
The body was fairly solid but it did need both quarters replaced and a new front and rear valances.
The seller bought all the sheetmetal from Year One and installed the quarters himself.
He also bought new black interior panels, and seatcovers from Year One to replace the original green ones.
The seller painted and detailed the underside and front suspension.
New brightworks and weather-stripping all around.
Grill is perfect
New fuel tank.
Exhaust manifolds with TTI exhasut to new 'Cuda tips.
Engine compartment is nicely detailed to stock condition.
The car's build sheet is gone but the body stampings, VIN, and fender tag match.
The original 383 is long gone.
The car has a freshly rebuilt 440 sixpack engine that is stock. He has all the receipts.
The 4 speed is supposed to be an 18 spline Hemi piece and the car has a Dana 60 rear.
The car was repainted vitamin C orange and the paint and body look very nice.
To sum the car up, it's a nicely restored, turn key, original f4 green 383 4 speed 'Cuda that's had new quarters installed, new orange paint, and a 440 sixpack and trac pak drivetrain installed.
The seller told my buddy he has $47,500 invested in the car and is firm at his asking price of $50k
I'm sure you could put 47k in completely restoring a 'Cuda, especially if you bought all the restoration parts from Year One, but I don't think this particular car is worth that kind of money.
I know an original 1970 'Cuda is an extremely desirable car, and this car is ready to show or go but it still seems high for an original green, 383 'Cuda that's had re-pop quarters installed.
My buddy is looking to buy a turn key car to drive, show and enjoy, not to flip, but he doesn't want to pay waaay over the car's value either.
He's not a Mopar expert, but has always wanted a nice 4 speed Mopar E-body.
He is going to drive 3 hours to look at the car in person and is SERIOUSLY considering paying $50k for the car.
The seller seems to be a very nice, honest guy and welcomes bringing body and paint guys to check the car over closely.
