E-Body Question!
« on: December 09, 2005 - 02:26:52 PM »
I have a couple of E body questions.

1) on 72-74 barracuda/'cudas, can someone clarify the paint sceme for the back of the car/tail light assembly. I see a lot of cars and some are painted body color, some are flat black, do some have a covering?

2) Magnum 500 wheels. What did these come on. I seen a nice 71 cuda with these on it, they were the solid chrome ones, no trim rings. Thought they'd look better on a 72+ rather then the rallye with the "honeycomb" centers.

Thanks
Dave

I can answer the first one. On '72 to '74 'CUDAs from the factory, black paint on the back means 'CUDA.
All Barracudas are painted body color, I have a book around here somewhere that explains all that. I painted my Barracuda's tail black 'cause I think it looks Bada$$.
It's not correct but neither is anything else on that car

OK, I'll take a stab at question #2.  ::) ::) ::)  They now make solid chrome Rally wheels. No trim ring. Maybe they make solid chrome magnum 500 wheels too??? I haven't seen them, but it is a possibility I suppose. The real magnum's had black trim.

I just really liked the look of this car and was just wondering what style wheel they were and what they came on.  I have been corresponding with a guy in N. Dakota who has a 73 'Cuda he's painting now. I know the car has aluminum wheels of some sort. Thought it would look sharp with these wheels on it. Its a black car as well.

Those are definitely magnum 500's. The same black trim as I remember. Only mine had trim rings. So maybe these were something special??? I'm sorry I can't help more.  :banghead:

Did you notice how wide the rear wheels were?  My guess is that they are aftermarket or specially made wheels.  Since the trim rings would look a little dorky on the wider rear wheels, why not just crome plate all of them?  Just a thought on an observation. :2cents: :thinkerg:

I would check out Specialty Wheels, Ltd in Portland, Or. at phone number 503-491-8848 or check their web site out at www.specialtywheelsltd.org as I'm sure they have the chrome magnum 500's in all sizes. Hope this helps.

Hey thanks guys for the input, that looks like a great site to buy rallye wheels and them chrome magnum's. I just kinda wanted to know if the magnum style wheels came on 72+ 'Cudas. I am looking at a black one that is being painted now, just thought they'd look better then the rallye's with the "honeycomb" centers. But I don't want to put them on if they never came on 'cudas.

Thanks

Just my 2 cents on the wheels.

The wheels in the picture are not the ones in the description (Rallyes with Good Year Polyglass tires. F60-14).  You might know that already.

The wheels look like aftermarket 15" Magnum 500s.  You can even order them from Summit Racing/Jegs/Paddock/etc. for about $130+ for 15x8 rim.  The pictured tires are current day Good Year radials.

If I'm not mistaken, 72+ Cudas (and Challengers) had the option of Magnum 500 rims but they were 14" non chrome only from the factory and needed a brushed aluminum trim ring.  I think none came chrome for these years, although in the mid to late 60's chrome 14" Magnum 500s (no trim ring) were available as I just talked to a guy with a '68 GTX that told me this.  With the 14" wheels, you can't put too much tire on them, I think the widest is 235/60R-14.

Here's a pic of mine.  14"x6", brushed steel, brushed aluminum trim ring.  I think the trim rings are factory.  They look like the ones the Paddock sells in thier catalog.
1972 Dodge Challenger Rallye 340, AT, Code TB3=Super Blue, SBD=8/17/1971.  Yes, a Rallye without the fender louvers from the factory because of the body side molding option.

Yeah the wheels that are on that car don't go with the auction, you can buy them separate. Thats why I contacted the guy, he will sell the wheels/tires separately. So I was considering picking them up for when I get a car. The original tires were taking off because its a low mileage car, they are the wheels he's giving with the auction. I guess I'll wait and see what he wants for them first, now that I know I can buy them online easily.

Magnum 500 wheels were only available in 14" on our Mopars. They were a chrome outer ring like in the pictures on the Cuda but in 1969 they switched to the style requiring the trim ring. This style stayed until around 1979, remember the Aspens?
