Well guys... I finally started sanding the beast down... slowly but surely... the pic here is mostly done with an orbital, but once I found out that wasn't the best to use, I went out and got a Dual-Action sander at Sears (Craftsman of course!!)... I'll post a new(er) pic shortly...

Looking good LB!  It is a very slow process.  My husband stripped our hood with chemicals then sanded the rest by hand.  It took forever.  You get great satisfaction when you do this yourself instead of paying someone to do it for you.  Granted, some people can't do it themselves, but if you can...it's so much fun!

How are you going to do the inside door jambs? Hand sand?
Also, whats the best way to clean up the underside, if you don't have a rotisarie?

I ask because, I'll be tackling this some day hopefully soon.

I know the feeling on how long it takes...It took me about 10 whole days to strip and sand down the whole car door jams and all. I ended up using 3 gallons of aircraft stripper and 3/4 roll of 80 grit sandpaper on the D/A sander. That aircraft stripper is some evil stuff. it removes it all. Decals, paint, skin!!!   ...it was wicked, and very stinky..   Keep up the good work, it takes lots of time to do it yourself but to do it yourself adds more satisfaction and pride when completed. Like my Dad say's if you did not build it yourself, it is not your car..I hear it all the time.. Although he is right in my opinion. I am doing all the work on mine myself (the body, engine, interior) and by doing all work myself, would make me re-think the idea of ever selling it, if I ever thought of it. Which will be    NEVER...

Chryco: It's very solid now that I've got all the rust cut out of her... The only thing that's not solid are the floors as we (my friend and I) are still cleaning them up..

Rev: Thanks for the words!! It is slow, esspecially only a few hours at a time maybe twice a week if I'm lucky... After reading your website, I took your advice and took an air chisel to the welds on my floor pans.... man does that ever clean them up!! Thanks!!

Wedge: I honestly hadn't thought about the door jambs yet... most of it happens when I get there.... I'll let you guys know what I do end up doing...

Any suggestions on a good paint removal?? I plan on sending the car out for sandblasting, but I want to have most, if not all of the exterior paint off before it goes out. Hopefully it'll cost a little less...!!

Sorry about all the specks in the pics posted... I wiped down the area that had been sanded and forgot that it goes everywhere!! You can see that the hood is about 1/3 done....

Lemonboy, I just had to say something...I have two teenagers and they are great kids.  But, I know how they are pulled in every direction with school and after curricular activities, friends, etc.  I think what you (and the other young guys around here) are doing is phenominal.  You could be like a lot of kids of your generation and playing video games to relax (just like we did when we were kids), but instead, you are doing something extremely cool and productive.  My hats off to you!!  20 years from now you will have so much knowledge...kind of like ChrycoPsycho!

I will be starting to sand my 73 Challenger tomorrow. I thought of using paint stripper as well but I have been told that this will cause problems when it comes time to apply the paint. Supposably the paint stripper leaves a residue. Does anyone have any comments?

We used paint stripper on our hood.  It took most of it off, however there was still A LOT to do by hand.   I can't imagine there would be any stripper left after all the hand sanding you'll do.

it does get in all the little cracks. I had some trouble with it when I primered some areas again. It will make the primer bubble back up. even after I had sanded the whole thing by had to clean it all up after the fact. So what I did to fix my problem is I would load up the spray gun with straight laquer thinner and blast the area good that I used the stripper on and then wipe it down with a clean rag. I have not had any problems after a done that. maybe that will help.. the stripper surely makes it easier to go down to the bare metal !!!

Any areas I can't get with my D/A, I'll let the guy who's sandblasting it for me get.. the more and more I read your website Rev, the more and more rev'ed (pardon the pun) up I get about finishing mine!! Thanks!!
