how do you set axle end play?
« on: December 26, 2005 - 07:19:41 PM »
this may be a stupid question, but i am going to swap centersections from a 741 to a 489. i am pretty sure i can do it, but would you guys help me?!?!?!? i really do not know how to set the axle end play.
i found this on google, is it right:

1) Remove wheel covers, wheels, brake drums, axle shaft retainer plate nuts 2) Pull axle shafts out of housing being careful to avoid damaging oil seals 3) Drop drive shaft 4) Remove 10 or 12 (or however many) nuts securing pumpkin to rear axle housing 5) Place drain pan under housing and remove pumpkin. Install whatever pumpkin you want and reverse steps to reassemble. Make sure to set axle end play after installing axles or you will wipe out the rear wheel/axle bearings. Add sure-grip lube and you're done.

10 bolts on the center carrier
use a jack to break the seal between the carrier & housing , it helps to lower it too
while you have the axles out repack the brgs with grease , they do not get oiled  from the diff
a 489 "should have a floating center pin inside the diff , if so you are ok , if it has a 4 pinion sure grip unitit will have 2 "buttons that will fall out, these need to be in there to set axle end play
the right axle has a threaded collar on it , this needs to be tightened until virtually all end play is gone , I generally hit the right axle with a hammer to be sure the brgs are fully seated them check the end play again , it should be .008 -.018 end play , there is a hokked lock tab to install to keep the adjuster in place after the end play is adjusted correctly
