Well, at least I don't feel like a total idiot as others have had it happen to them.

I have the same problem everytime I fill mine but in california its due to the stupid vapor recovery type nozzles we are stuck useing. the rubber from the nozzel doesnt fit in the flip style gas cap and gets stuck in there alot of the time,Im looking for a standard flat type gas cap just to make it eaiser to fill.

I spilled gas down the side of my car once.  :pullinghair:   After that I hold the handle up as to point the nozzle as far downward as I can.
When the pump shuts off thats it. I do not try to fill any more than that. I have not had any more problems.

I now will never pump without holding the nozzle up.

I pumped gas at my parents service station since I was 12 till I went to University, I seen so many old vehicles that were impossible to fill! The holding the nozzle upside down works for a lot of cars. I remember this one 79 ford half ton that was impossible to fill, the wind had to be blowing the right way, he had to be on the right side of the pump island, and he had a block of wood he used to drive the back wheel up onto, then if all that was right and I held my tongue out the right way it would take gas!   :banghead:

:roflsmiley: I've had a truck like that, everyone at the pumps would be looking at me like I'm some idiot, it was very picky about how the hose had to go in, I'd be turning it in all kinds of ways, and every pump at every gas station had a different sweet spot to get it to work. Boy that was fun filling it in the rain!  :banghead:
