440 Buildup? Stage IV heads?
« on: December 11, 2005 - 06:41:28 PM »
I am wanting to build a 440 that can mostly be used for Street use but would like to run the quarter mile every now and then. I have a few blocks and a few set of heads that I can build up and wanted some feedback. Only thing is that I don't have alot of money to do this.  I don't have any experience building a motor either.  I figured I would get everything together and have someone who knows what they are doing put it together for me. The car is a 1970 Barracuda with a 4 speed.  Any recomendations would be appreciated.

440 block (1969 date) - w/ set of L2266 slugs / .030 overbore
As far as I know the crank and rods are OEM.
Cast Iron six pack intake and carb setup (1969 date too)
pair of stock 906 heads
pair of 3614476 Stage IV heads - Are these any good?  Can't find much info other than they are 86 CC or so. Any benifet?
Standard 4 BBL intake - 750 double pumper

I want to run pump gas and of course get the most bang for the buck.

Thanks!
Bryan

the 2266 pistons are a good quality piston but a tad low on compression at 8.6:1 with open chamber heads , closer to 9.5 :1 with closed chamber heads , the 2355 will work better
the Stage 4 heads are decent & definatly flow better then the production heads but are not up to todays latest castings , on a tight budget they will work great though

What about using the 906 heads?  They are 79.5 CC and should raise the compression up a bit right?  Probably bump it to 9.5 to 1 don't you think?  Or do you think the flow characteristics of the Stage IV heads outway the smaller CC head?  What about shaving the head to bring up the ratio? Is that worth it or is that a bad thing to do.

How about a cam selection?  Seems like alot the 509 cam is common to this type of build?

906 have exactly the same size chamber as the Stage 4 , you can deck the block to raise the compression some bbut it will not get you far & the intake or the intake face of the heads will need to be carefully milled also to get the intake on
 I`m not a fan of the 509 , the 484 would be a better choice or a K58 engle

Thanks for some great info.  After doing more research I found several websites have list the CC for these heads as follows:  I know they are both open chamber heads but the CC is listed as different? How come?

906 - 79.5 CC
476 - 86+ CC

This website says that a 78 CC head will give about 9.3 to 1.  I figure that a 79.5 CC head will be about 9 to 1 at the the least. A little on the low side still though.  So I think you are right with suggesting the 2355.

How can you tell if you have stage IV heads?  :dunno: I have a 440 in my garage and it is suppose to have them on it but I am not sure? I was told they were off of a 1970 440 out of a R/T challenger!!

How about this...

You could sell the sixpack setup and 906 heads. That would give you plenty of money to do something like the following.

Get the block bored, decked and balanced
Port the later heads yourself using Mopar porting templates
Mopar M1 single plane intake
Mopar 509 cam
750-800 afb or holley

That's just what I'm dreaming up for when I build another car. I'm in the same situation as you. I've got a 440 block, a set of 346 heads and a M1 sitting around. I want to build something stong on a budget. The above setup running around 9.5 compression should really rock and roll.

the casting # is under the valve cover on top of the intake runner generally , it is also under the intake runners as well but you would need to remove the intake & gasket & use a mirror to see it

I thought about that but am not sure I want to go that route.  I kinda like the old school look with a little more punch!  Part of the charm of having a Cuda is having a six pack or hemi too!!  Can't afford the hemi so a six pack will have to do.  :dogpile:

I do have a single plane intake in the garage though, so i could always to that route if the six pack won't fit.
