Got a friend buying a Hemi, need info
« on: January 09, 2006 - 07:38:38 PM »
I have a friend who is buying a Hemi Cuda from somewhere in Ohio. He says this is an original that was parked in 74 after a short life of street racing. This friend of mine is and always has been a Chevy guy, so he asked me for guidance. I am no Hemi guy at all. So I need to know what to look for to let him know this is a real Hemi car. Any and all info will be appreciated. Need to know if they had an oversize radiator, bigger shocks, boxed in leaf springs..........just all the little different things that were exclusive to the Hemi

My best suggestion would be to send me all the details on the car, and I will relive your friend of all the headaches :roflsmiley:

Just kidding ...hope he can snag it!

VIN and fender tag are best places to start.

OK, here are some things to look for:

VIN should read BS23R0xxxxxxx for a 70, BS23R1xxxxxxx for a 71..
Code on fender tag should say E74 for hemi....trans should either be D21 for 4 speed or D32 for automatic
Should have N96 on fender tag (Fresh air package, AKA shaker hood)
the radiator support (by drivers side of radiator) should have the last 8 digits of the car's VIN stamped in it. Also, these numbers should be stamped in the cowl (drivers side by windshield wiper mech access opening)
Car should have a 26 inch high perf radiator
Car should have torque boxes at front of rear leaf springs and the reinforcements at the rear end of the front frame rails
Car should have the hemi rear suspension and 3/8 fuel line...but these things might have been changed in it's race car former life.
Should have a K member skid plate
Plenty of other little things to look for, but above is a start.

Good tips hemi71! Here are the places for VIN's that hemi71 was referring to.
Good luck and don't forget to let us know how it turns out (good or bad).

Where in Ohio, I live there, if possible I'll check it out, not to worry, I can't afford to buy it out from under the guy, nor would I.
