'Unlimited Products' fibreglass panels - anyone used them?
« on: January 12, 2006 - 05:52:01 PM »
Front fenders on the Barracuda have been smashed and pooly repaired in the past and given that my paint and panel quote has just doubled, I thought I might look for options.  Noticed that Unlimited does fibreglass front fenders and wondering if anyone has used these or their other products and what the quality and fit was like.

Many downsides to using them I suppose (not original, fit and alignment?, flexing and cracking) while the only upside is cost ($170 each vs a few thousand in repairs).  Although if the fit is good, won't be able to notice the difference after paint.  Thoughts??

Mine fit pretty good just a little  altering was needed. The only bad thing is they seem to get spider cracks on top of the fender next to the windshield.

You might also check out Auto Body Specialties.  I bought some front fenders from them when I had my Dart and my friend who does body work for a living said they were a lot better than the ones he got for his Charger from Unlimited.  Better quality all around.  www.autobodyspecialt.com

Oz,if your patient, steel repro Cuda fenders are coming from Goodmark, the Challenger fenders are expected in the spring, and 70 Cuda to follow. The 71 Cuda fenders are ready, but have to have the louvers stamped. That is in the works now. the 72-74 fenders will follow. I heard pricing will run about $475 each, with   the 71 Cuda fenders being priced higher due to the stamping of the louvers!

Thanks for the feedback guys, seems the high cost of the panel beating is due to them quoting on welding and filing every dent (of which there are a few!) so I need to work out whether I am prepared to go to this length on the car (budget).  The Goodmark repros would be the solution but I want to keep the project moving else I wont get the car finished this year either. Might give the fibreglass a miss regardless but thanks for the comments.

Why not try E bay and see if you can find some better steel fenders.

While were on the subject I have a couple of questions....
Is there a significant performance advantage to fiberglass over steel due to weight loss (on a `73 small block) ?
I need to replace my passenger side fender, and Im considering fiberglass.  Should I therefore replace both fenders, AND the hood with fiberglass parts, or can I get away with just one fender?

And can I just say something about the fiberglass header panel on 72-74's challengers?  ***Rant Alert*** :22yikes:
WHAT THA H**L??  The one that I pulled out of my car was cracked on the passenger side headlights, and the molding edge was reconstructed out of mud at somepoint.  I won a clean one on ebay, and that broke clean in half during shipping (sorted it out).  I now have two broken header panels, and Im trying to figure out if they can be either repaired, or I should try again to find a better one on ebay?
Of course every one of them I see up for auction is cracked or broken somehow, and this seems to be the ONLY part that no one is gonna repro.

Thanks!

Couldn't a fiberglass worker just strip it down and put another layer or two over the top to fix it?
