Engine Color
« on: February 02, 2006 - 11:26:49 AM »
okay I have searched and must be looking for the wrong keywords!!

I have two projects

1. 1970 Barracuda Gran Coupe 318 auto.  I want to paint the engine back the original color but do not know if it should be blue or orange.  Also does the whole engine get this color (valve covers, water pump, intake etc..)

2. Same question for my 1970 Challenger RT 440 all original.

uhhhhh...turquoise is NOT blue....up until 69 all 383 and 440 motors were painted turquoise, in 1969 the non HP big blocks were painted turquoise and the HP motors were painted street hemi orange...in 1970 turquoise was mostly dropped, and all non HP motors were painted blue. 71 was a transisition year, some 340 Hp motors were painted st hemi orange, some blue, and 72 and later all engines were painted blue.  Some 383 HP motors in 69-70-71 with A/C were painted turquoise or blue. Hemis came in two colors of orange...race hemi orange and street hemi orange depending on year

Just trying to get the right answer to the question.

chrysler called it street hemi orange...but what you buy today in a spray can from DC is too light of a shade of orange. Totally Auto sells what is pretty "nuts on" to the original orange of the HP motors. I compared a valve cover painted with Totally Auto's paint to a valve cover off of a stone original 32k mile 70 R/T 440HP i once owned, it was a very good match.

According to Paul Herd the author of "Challenger & Barracuda Restoration Guide 1967-1974" the 440 was painted the Hemi Orange.  As for the 318, in 1968 the color was Chrysler Red and in 1971 it was Chrysler Blue.  I hope this helps somewhat.

Diff between me and him is I actually WORK on Mopars, not just look at them.

I just wanted the guy to paint his motor the right color...I'd be pissed if i painted my car's motor what i thought was the correct color, and a judge dinged me for it since it was wrong.

I'd take what you get out of #1 with a grain of salt...I've seen some mistakes in that book.
Dont hesitate to post your questions here, lots of knowledgable people here.
