Question about 70 Challenger rear panel blackout...
« on: January 19, 2006 - 09:58:31 PM »
Okay geniuses...  On some 70 Challengers I've seen, the rear panel above the taillights is blacked out.  Not argent (like SE's?) but black.  Questions:

1 - Is the black part paint only, or is it a plastic trim piece?
2 - Is this blackout tied to the rear bumblebee stripes option, or is it correct for R/T (sidestripe or not) cars as well?
3 - If it's paint, which paint?  Organosol, like Cuda rear panels, or what?

Just wondering... :dunno: :worshippy

As far as I'm aware there is no real evidence of there being a definite "yes" or "no" answer.
Some did, others didn't. The cars that people have seen are survivors or purchased originally from the poster themselves. Some people think it's part of the bumblebee stripe option or the R/T stripe option.

I have no idea and have yet to see any real evidence of why they are like this.
IMO - both are correct, it comes down to what you like most.
I went without, some may like it, some may not but if they don't, paint their ride, simple as that.

JS27, FY1 and Barry will be able to shed a little more light, but I doubt a definite answer will arise.

Cheers,
Carl

the rear blackout is painted , probably Organisol , my preference is to have it painted unlike NZ
I have no fact on if the blackout was part of the Bee stripe , probably not though as the Bee stripe was painted also & could have been almost any body color

As far as I know for 1970 - T/As only with the tail panel blackout. It was paint - Organisol.

When i bought my 70 challenger 5 yrs. ago, i did alot of research, i was lucky enough to find the original owner in north carolina, he mailed me pics of the car when he bought it new, and the rear panel was painted semi gloss black. My car is a bumble bee stripe car (black) and the body is hemi orange. when i bought the car, it was painted white, when i was in the prosess of restoring it , i scraped down some paint below the white and found black, but below that, it was orange. So i would assume they did this, probly with a orisol can??? But this car was a dealer lot car, not specially orderd . and the original owner said he did not have that done, (i was curious about that too)  I remember many years ago, my neighbor, had a 70 chall. gold, with a bumble bee stripe,  and it was also blacked out too,  i was about 13 yrs old at the time, and would never forget that car..

I keep hearing conflicting things it seems.   Let me try and get this straight.
My car is an RT/SE.   What color is the rear tail panel for the RT/SE?
Thanks

I've tried to get a definitive answer to that very question and have never had a "for sure" answer.  My original tail panel is black.  I took it all the way down to the metal to see if there was any other color on there...nothing but black.

I though some SEs had black instead of argent rear panels
