help with 440 engine problem

  i have a 1978 440. just got it put back together it will not get any gas and gas a new fuel pump on it. and when we put a little gas in the carb it just spits right back out. does anybody know what is wrong with it? i have no clue

If you diconnect the fuel line at the carb and try to crank the engine (use a cup to contain any over flow!!!) will gas come out? 

-If yes, reconnect fuel line and assess carb-is there fuel getting into the fuel bowl?  Inlet needle stuck?  Do you get any gas gush out when you move the throttle from the accelerator pump?  Was it rebuilt/replaced recently?

-If no, what kind of fuel pump do you have?  Electric or mechanical?  Electric-make sure getting proper voltage/ground.  Do you hear it "humm"?  Bad diaphram?  Mechanical-make sure the lever/arm that goes into the block is properly placed.  Make sure lines are tight on inlet/outlet.  Possiblly defective?

If pump situation OK, go back to tank. (Assuming all lines are clear!)  Fuel pick up clogged?  Did your vehicle have a 440 in it originally?  Is the fuel system set up for a 440 or a small block or /6?

Just some ideas to throw out. I would tackle the fuel starvation problem fist then reassess the fuel spit out situation after.  Not sure if they are connected or not but you definately need fuel first.  Just my 2 cents.

I agree too, figure out the fuel supply problem before the rest, once you have good fuel pressure and volume, then recheck the other problem.
oh yeah....If you just got the motor back together, and you're using a mechanical fuel pump, did you put the fuel pump pushrod back in?

i figured it all out this morning the jackass that i had check the timing didnt know what he was doing. it was 180 out on the cam so it caused it to leave the valves open it spit the gas out. i was using a regular pump but i bought a electric one any it working fine to. the car was set up for a 6 but that was changed before the engine went in to it. thanks for all the help. i really needed it.
