« on: February 06, 2006 - 10:06:37 AM »
I was wondering if i take the outside of my GC down to metal, then primer with Valspar 2k sealer, primer, etcher(dtm). Will it hinder any body work that needs to be done at a body shop prior to painting?thanks

I haven't used that particular primer, but I can tell you what most of the paint manufacturers will tell you...strip the car to bare metal, do your "heavy" metal bumping, lay down 2 coats of epoxy primer, do your "medium" fill work, lay down a high-build primer, block sand and use "fine" putties, then throw a sealer over that immediately before painting. In short, you want to get the bare metal covered to keep rust from forming. You want to use an epoxy primer for this as it is NOT porous...it's also not meant to be sanded (other than scuffing prior to laying down a different type of primer or body filler). If you have had the car blasted or used a mechanical means of stripping, there should be enough texture on the bare metal for the primer to bite into. If not, you may have to prep the car with a DA with 80 grit.

does this help?

Thanks Steve,It doesnt need any heavy metal bumping so I will blast and primer. The good things about valspar 2k primer is its a sealer,DTM-direct to metal etcher and filler all in one.My paint supplier thinks the old 2 stage way will go away with this one step primer.I did the inside and engine bay all ready, nice stuff to spray and it really bonds well. The body/paint guy that was going to do my car on the side sold me on it,then we had a falling out, which is ok i wanted to do most myself anyway except the paint and final prep before paint

Cool...sounds like that will make a great sub-strate [sp?].

I laid down DP-40 on surfaces that will be topcoated and dip-gray Zero Rust from Resto Rick on the undside, inside, and the roof (car will have a vinyl top).

Depending on how hard that Valspar is, you or your body guy may elect to shoot a more sanding-friendly primer. I have the PPG K-38 high-build. PPG claims that you can build a 2 mils at a shot! that's a lot of build, most of which will be block sanded off. Of course, larger dings and seams will be filled directly on the DP-40 with Rage Extreme filler.

Your painter may also want to shoot a coat of the Valspar immediately before paint to "sandwhich" in all of the body work. Bleed through is my biggest concern, but my PPG rep said that the bleed through problems of 10 years ago have been pretty much solved (as long as you follow directions!)

Take some pics!
