Car stalled, interior, rear and side lights died
« on: February 10, 2006 - 09:45:35 PM »
I started up my chally to leave work, as I was backing out of a spot,
at night with the headlights on, the car stalled.
I immediately restarted the car without shutting off the lights,
and the gauge cluster lights  went off and would not go on.
I tried to adjust the panel dimmer and it didn't work,
but it shut off my cd player.

I drove home and checked the fuses, all look OK.
I also noticed that my rear lights, brake lights, and side lights don't work.
The only lights working are my headlights.
The cd player now is not affected.

What happened and what should I do?

It's early in the day, and my coffee hasn't kicked in yet, so all I come up with is some kind of bad connection at the bulkhead. If it is running fine otherwise, then that would seem to indicate it isn't some mechanical problem.

I had a problem something like that and it ended up being a grounded fuse.   :dupe:  It sounds to me like you have a ground problem somewhere!   :dunno:

OK, the owners manual says the int guage lights, the rear lights, brake lights and side lights
are all on the same fuse.
I tried to pry the fuse out with a screwdriver, b/c I saw it was broken, but there were some sparks and now nothing works.
Cept the aftermarket power windows which are connected directly to the battery.
So it's not the battery.
I musta blown some main fuse when I tried to remove the other fuse.
Question, where is the main fuse located on a 72 chally?

I'm guessing it's the fused linkage you need to check out. That guy is located just after the starter relay. It is part of the front light harness. It would look like a cyst on the wire.

Had a similar problem in my 69' Stang.  Turned out I had a box in the trunk shift and hit the rear tail light.  The impact crimped the wiring into the bulb holder, grounding it out.  I have also seen people screw interior screws into wiring doing the same thing.
