Gas Tank Bolts broke
« on: February 03, 2003 - 01:54:13 AM »
I finally have gotten around to replacing the gas tank on my Challenger and was removing the bolts from the gas tank straps.  Both of the screws broke in half and the upper part of the screw with back bolt remains in the frame.

Anyone have any idea on how to get them out?

I've used "easy outs" with pretty good luck. I would saturate the stuck bolt with wd-40 for a few days. My set came from Snap-on,  but I also have a cheaper Black and Decker set. It's a reverse looking drill bit;  just need to punch the center of the broken bolt to give the tool something to bite onto. It worked great when I broke my harmonic balancer bolt when my engine was in the car. Good Luck

if you are talking about the bolts that come down from the body.........they are in a slot that looks like a key hole, so you have to push up then twist

Assuming it is a 70-74 Challenger & not the 78 Mitsu version it will have the bolts that Mike described , replacements are available from Year One & Paddock , Check Mopar first though they may still be available from them  ;)

Thanks for the info Chryco Psycho, BIG MIKE, and rcerex.  I finally got the gas tank bolt off today.  Took a while as they were a little bent, and did not want to go through the keyhole.   The car has been in storage for almost 20 years and I needed to clean out the gas tank, as the gas in it went bad.

Glad to hear you got the bolts out. I've used POR 15 gas tank sealer when my tank smelled like varnish from bad paint. POR 15 sells metal prep which etches the metal in preparation for the sealer. They sell for 25.00 and 12.00 respectively.
