Quarter Panels: Stupid Quesiton
« on: February 13, 2006 - 01:20:00 PM »
I'm new to all of this, so don't laugh too hard.  I thought quarter panel skins were thin metal that was literally intended to be a skin that is welded in place outside of the currently rusting quarter panel...like a new skin.  For example, on my Cuda, I won't need to replace the full quarter, but only from the lip down.  But of course I intend to cut off the old quarter and weld on replacements.  Do I get skins for this, or something else?  Thanks.

You just get new replacement panel for the area that needs it.

Thanks 4cruizin,
For this application, do I want their Quarter Panel Die Formed ($180 each), or Quarter Panel Factory Style ($491 each)?  Thanks.

I guess it depends on how much of your quarter is rotted??  You said you just needed the bottom of the panel so I would look for that area as I think it is available.  Hope this helps!  Post some pick if you get a chance too!

Quarter skins are pretty close to the original thickness of the factory skin. You are supose to cut off your old skin and butt weld it in place. When you hang a skin it's a good idea to leave as much of the original skin on the car. I had a 74 challenger somebody pop riveted a skin over the old rust one and bondoed in the seams. Needless to say it looked wierd.

1/4 panel factory replacement???  Shermans, if I'm not mistaken, has 1/4 skins, but their factory replacements for 70-71 cuda's, although they show on their site , aren't available yet.  Let me know if I'm wrong.

Cudaaah...

I just purchased skins yesterday...I'd rather have full 1/4's.

Sherman's lists skins, but also die-formed replacement panels, and for those who need the full quarters, they have a listing for them, and said they'll have them soon.

Do you know the diffference between the die formed and the skins???

I had talked w/ shermans in Jan. they said they would have the new 1/4 by 2/15...when I spoke w/ them last week, they denied telling me that and said they have no idea when they'll be available...maybe as late as next fall...Thus i bought the skins.   I'd be interesed in knowing id the "die formed" are better than the skins.

I just spent a grand on sheet metal from Sherman's, including die formed quarters L/R, trunk panel L/R, trunk extensions L/R, wheel wells L/R, and gas tank brace.  Sherman's doesn't have pics of a lot of these, so I'll post them here when I get them soon.
