Power Brakes with a 318 and a nicely warmed cam???
« on: February 08, 2003 - 12:26:44 AM »
Hey guys, after reading some of the posts about this topic with extremely high lifting cams, what do you think is possible with about a .484* or bigger, if tolerable, lift cam turning in my 318? I haven't started any engine work with it yet, but I'm planning on having a slightly warm engine under the hood. Details like an Edelbrock 625 cfm carb., a MP dual plane manifold, about a .484* lift cam, forged pistons, and I'm thinking of seeing what 2.02/1.60 valves would be like in the 318. How do these kinds of modifications effect the power brake booster's vacuum? If anybody has stuck with the power brakes after a similar build-up, how do you like them? What things should I consider when it comes time to build-up my engine as far as my approach to the internals? Please let me know any ideas you guys can think of, since I have never built an engine before. (Plenty of small engines though:))

No big deal you can always use a vacuum canister & keep the power brakes
It is actiually duration that affects the vacuum produced by the engine but longer duration cams do adversly affect vacuum

Thanks Chryco Psycho, I'll probably end up doing that because I want to see what the power brakes are like before I make my decision of switching to manuals.  As for the cam, I knew it was one of the two; either lift or duration. ;)  I think a 292* duration is around what .484 lift cam I've been thinking of.  Off hand, do you know how rough that size cam would be in the 318?  The reason I'm asking is I have a '69 Charger w/318 and 360 heads and the cam size in there is overkill for the engine.  It takes a good five minutes of stepping on the gas just to get the car to idle for about 30 seconds before dying from getting so low of an idle. I love the rumble of it and it's exhaust note, but I don't want to have it that extreme in the Challenger.

I would be looking at the 268/272 Mopar cam as  the biggest cam to rum as thatb will get you 6000 rpm , how hifgh doi you want to go?

I'll look into that cam when the time comes.  I really just want to make a mean small block without breaking the bank too much.  I want to build an engine that makes over 300 hp, so should I go with my 318 and do the required things with that, or should I look into trying to find an older 360 block and crank? Thanks for the replies and advice so far, Chryco Psycho.
