In Calif. there is no smogging of cars from 1975 on back. When I built my Challenger I found out that the larger the engine the less smog control devices it came with in 70 so I put in a 440 6 pack engine with 10.5 and a 282 dur 484 lift cam ported heads and it still passed and the only smog control it called for here was the NOX control which is a sticker on the speedo and two plugs to replace the vacuum advance line, pcv valve and thats it. it passed easy. Now we dont even worry about smog except for newer cars which I only own one for my wife.
everything else is 1914 to 1975.

Honestly, I wouldn't worry too much about whether the government is going to make us modify pre-emissions controlled vehicles to confirm to modern emissions requirements.

Instead, I'd recommend worrying about what you're going to do in about 15 years when we run out of gas all together.  There will always be a way around emissions restraints - be it an extra tax, a bribe, a buddy with an inspection license, or some clever engineering.  But there's few ways around an expired natural resource.

SE wisconsin ... gotta luv it.  I gave them the adress to my buddys cabin...    Gotta say collector plates ROCK!

Did you hear the latest.. now they are thinking of getting rid of the smog testing cause its costing to much to maintain the program.

Yeah, I was gonna do that to with a friend of mine who's out by Madison. As far as that testing goes, they should get rid of it - big waste of money, and it doesn't do any good as I see it. But aren't federal highway funds or some such tied to the testing program? Thought so anyway...

There is a guy on here that had to go thru hoops out in Arizona, if I remember correctly. I haven't see him on this site in ages, so I can only remember his name was Scott.  :banghead: He had to fiddle with his carb to lean it down to pass emissions on his 70 Challenger.  :dupe:  :dupe:  :dupe:

Whatever happened to Robb_Scottsdale, he always spoke his mind. Can't beleive he hasn't been on since 04.

Im still here.  LOL

Actually AZ just passed a new law, where, if your car is registered with Classic car insurance....

NO MORE EMISSIONS TESTING !

Mostly the reason I kept having trouble with emissions, was that I kept changing carbs/motors.   Last year though I passed the first time through.  My nose is getting good as the test equipment.  :)

Actually if i remember right, here in calif before they made the law to 1975(and this is still policed to 1975-current) it was any car pre 1966 was smog exempt.Whenever you swap in a new motor in a car after the exempt years, that car MUST conform to the year of the new motor. So,you have to go to a Smog referee and show them the new engne has ALL the components that came with the car it was originally in,Ex. all sensors, cats, computor, injection ect.It was a HUGE undertaking to get all the wiring harnesses/sensors in place to pass the referee's inspections.A new crate motor would not be accepted. And in fact, even smog exempt cars, legally have to conform to the original equipment.SO if a smog referee or a cop with a chip on his shoulder wanted to make you life miserable, he could still flag your car for inspection if its obvious major modifications are made over stock. If you have a blower under your hood you could still be subject to a smog referee, even tho its technically exempt.
