Auto A/C Upgrade
« on: February 05, 2006 - 04:08:38 PM »
As I go through the restoration process the only item that I will be adding that did not come on my 70 Challenger is A/C. I have seen the add on A/C from Classic Auto Air and think that it would be a good system but since I will have the car completely torn down is there a better way? Would it be possible to make it like stock with stock components? What original components would I need and are they all still available or reproduced? Since I will be replaceing my dash I could order one with the A/C cutouts and probably have a cleaner look.
Just trying to stay cool. Any advice?

My advice is to talk to Rev and Redline. They went aftermarket, but it doesn't look so much that way. I want to do what they did, but I have the heebie-jeebies.  In other words, they did great, but I don't know if I could.   :dunno:

I agree with Mek, Im pretty sure that Rev & Red went with vintage air....so they should know everything that it takes. I can tell you that it is a costly conversion because not only will you have to buy the dash, but you will also need the vents and ducts which in itself can be expensive.

Edit, found this on their site. So here is some reading material till Rev or Red can talk to ya...

Man...you guys just sent me down Memory Lane!  Trop...we went with a totally new system because we didn't know how/if our 35 year old equipment worked and if we were going to go through all the hassle--we were going to go with new stuff.  We did have many a night just staring and scratching our heads, but we figured it out.  Vintage doesn't have an e-body kit that will just plug in, so you have to use their "universal" kit.  You don't need the e-body ducts as they were too big for the tubing.  We fabbed our own ducts out of thin sheet metal.  It's really not that bad of a job...now that we've done it.

Let us know what you decide and we can help you with any questions you might have.  Good luck!

Thanks Guys.

As I get closer I am sure I will have many questions. I think the way to go is with After market.

Is ther a reason you did Vintage instead of Classic? I think Classic has a system for e-bodies?

I bought a system from http://bouchillonperformance.com/.   My car originally had A/C and they're kit replaced everything from the firewall forward.  The Sanden compressor is much more efficient, plus smaller and lighter.  Even fits under a shaker hood.
