Does anyone know where the vin is on a 72 318 block? :chatting:

Look on the passenger side of the block. Right above the oil pan rail towards the front of the block there is a raised pad about three inches long. The last 8 digits of the VIN should be there.

T-cat, just so you know, the thread on Dave's board that you linked to predated his site crash, so the photos are gone.

T/Ake care,

Is the oil pan rail where the pan bolts to bottom of motor?

Cool thank you,

Is it stamped on a separate pad or on the block itself?

Someone painted the block, and I'm not seeing it anywhere.

I was wondering if it could have been removed, or if it was just painted over.

Thank you for your help Alaska!!!

The pad is part of the block, you may have to scrape some paint off to read the numbers.

Best of luck,
Barry

There is no vin there, I have removed all paint. Is there any chance it wasn't stamped? The metal is smooth, but no vin.

Thank you!!!

It may be a warranty replacement block then? Look on the drivers side for an aluminum tag riveted to the block.

 :sadwavey:

I combed the block over, no tags on either side.

On the passanger side of the block, that vin area is there, but it is blank of #'s.

The tranny matches my vin#, and the block is casted 72 like the car.

Should I trash it and get a 440 block?

Thanks Alaska.

Its probably a warranty block meaning someone bought it new and something went wrong with the engine and it was replaced under warranty.  All warranty blocks don't have vins just casting dates.  And as far as trashing it for a 440 goes, it all depends what you want out of the car.  With an edelbrock build-up you can make a 318 pushing 425 hp easy.  your choice
